They where not justified at all, japan was going to surrender anyways after the chinese front collapsed right after the soviets declared war, the americans used the bombs to scare the USSR and to force japan to surrendet especifically to the US, they did not save any lifes at all, and they where aimed at 2 civilian cities that haved no strategic value to the war, there was no bases and no troops there. It was an complete and total warcrime. And you are saying that japan would fight to the last and that fighting in the mainland would be catastrophic, but you still think it would be good if it happened? What the fuck is wrong with you?
I wouldn’t sweat it, one of my history classes when I was in school had us debate whether the bombs were justifiable… If it had just been on military bases I might’ve considered it not as a warcrime.
The japanese were prepared to surrender after the Soviet invasion of Manchuria, not the bombs. The bombs were dropped due to cold war politics. They were practically just a stunt to scare Soviets.
To add to what was said, the U.S. wanted unconditional surrender when Japan’s only condition for surrender was that they keep their emporer. After the U. S. dropped the bombs and Japan surrendered, they let them keep the emporer anyway. They bombed them for practically no reason besides trying to intimidate the Soviets and anyone else who would stand against them.
