In this video, we provide context LTT missed in their recent “Raytracing is Now Mandatory” video. We address three overly praised titles and discuss the real definition of optimization.
We then bridge the connection between profits and optimization and end the poor excuse regarding how optimization is too expensive to provide in modern development. We then address the real issues with AI and ray tracing and define the problems with corporate graphic solutions.
Linus really ought to be kicked in the balls not just for all the abuse allegations but still having awful takes in almost everything.
Linus “Nvidia RTX” tech tips should’ve been buried with the abuse allegations.
That was my first reaction to seeing this post, can’t believe people still care about this unfunny YouTube thumbnail facer.
Any tech youtuber who unironically owns a Tesla deserves zero respect or authority over other technology discussions
Oh hey maybe treating gaming like nothing but a graphical upgrade showcase was a bad idea because infinite growth is a myth and we should concentrate on letting developers experiment with artistic style and gameplay rather than each individual pore on Skrimblo Bob’s ass.
I’d settle for them giving up on lighting and effects shit and turning to OTHER graphical benefits. For example animation and fabrics.
Infinity Nikki’s focus on getting fabrics right and making clothing actually feel like it’s worn by the character instead of being a feature of a model is actually incredible.
It’s the difference between a doll that wears real clothes and a fully plastic action figure and given that games increasingly monetise off of cosmetics the focus on improving these things would be really nice.
Meanwhile, I’m still grinding out my Good Vibes Farm in Stardew Valley.
But… I cannot help but feel that… maybe… we could raytrace my farm???
That would make my good vibes measurably gooder vibes, by some metric, I am certain.
Raytraced pixel art would be so
It used to be that you had to max out how good your game’s screenshots looked to sell it - but the modern gaming industry just doesn’t work like that anymore, if indeed it ever did. Major devs still locked in the graphics chase are only doing so because they haven’t figured out what Nintendo did back in the N64 era - specs don’t sell games, games sell games.
I think it worked with games that were significantly pushing the envelope, I remember being in awe of the Doom 3 alpha as a teenager. The thing is, I was never going to feel the same awe for the game released a year later that uses that Doom 3 engine but makes some minor improvements.
Yeah graphics do sell but only the games that actually are pushing the limits like doom 3 or crysis. Copy paste UE5 slop is not that at all and never will be
I haven’t really paid much attention to games with better graphics than modern pokemon in a long while, I recently watched the trailer for the new doom game and it did give me that same sense of wow that’s really fucking cool. Not that I will ever play it, even if I could afford it a pc upgrade is not worth the money to me, but it’s impressive to look at.
Supposedly there’s some controversy surrounding this guy but I haven’t figured out what yet cos no one will say. Anyone know? His points seem salient enough are there really such avid defenders of unreal engine?
I’m an avid hater of ue3 and 4 but 5 really just takes it to a new level I think lumen looks legitimately worse than any baked lightmap. Its so noisy and inaccurate causing such odd artifacts all the time. Oh and all the games perform like shit and look weird. Oversharpened blurry strange visuals where i can’t actually tell if there’s any better graphical effects because i can’t see shit. Feels like 4k + dlss performance + framegen is mandatory for all games which you can only get with the latest flagship card and everyone else gets shit i guess. More ewaste for the ewaste gods!
Also cryengines implementation of lumen called svogi is significantly better and crytek almost died entirely
Like a year ago he did a small niche PC part manufacturer dirty by royally screwing up the review of their product, which sparked a big controversy because the people who like LTT are also the people who like small niche PC part manufacturers. This opened the floodgates for further criticism - apparently everyone at LTT was being worked to the bone, every video was being rushed out the door to the point that there was no more time for fact checking or verification, female staffers were being mistreated, Linus was misusing company funds and going on his podcast to lie about what was happening, and probably some more stuff that I don’t remember.
But then it kinda… fizzled out. My hypothesis is that LTT has reached the point where they are “too big to fail”, and by that I mean that they have a large enough audience of people who don’t read Reddit threads to just ride out the wave until the people who were angry lost interest.
Oh i know about LTT’s shit if i ever saw Linus I’d rip off his ballsack little petite bourgeois scumbag he’s the archetype of all small family business owners who i hate with a divine passion. Also the fans of the channel are fanatics at this point and I’m pretty sure harrassed the vicitims of his companies abuse
Its threat interactive seemingly getting banned from being mentioned everywhere that I was curious about.
