Faye Schulman, born on this day in 1919, was a Jewish partisan and photographer who took up arms against the Nazis who were responsible for killing her family.

On August 14th, 1942, the Germans killed 1,850 Jews from the “Lenin” ghetto (named after Lenin, Poland, where Faye was from), including her parents, sisters, and younger brother. Faye was spared for her ability to develop photographs, and the Nazis ordered Faye to develop their photographs of the massacre. Later, she cited taking a photo of her dead family in a mass grave as the impetus to take up arms.

During a partisan raid on the camp, Faye fled to the forests and joined the Molotava Brigade, a partisan group mostly comprised of escaped Soviet Red Army POWs. She was accepted because her brother-in-law had been a doctor and they were desperate for anyone who knew anything about medicine. Faye served the group as a nurse from September 1942 to July 1944, even though she had no previous medical experience.

During another raid on the Lenin ghetto, Faye succeeded in recovering her old photographic equipment. During the next two years, she took over a hundred photographs, developing the medium format negatives under blankets and making “sun prints” during the day. While on missions, Faye buried the camera and tripod to keep it safe. Schulman is the only known Jewish partisan photographer from this era.

“I want people to know that there was resistance. Jews did not go like sheep to the slaughter. I was a photographer. I have pictures. I have proof.”

  • Faye Schulman

After liberation, Faye married Morris Schulman, also a Jewish partisan. Faye and Morris enjoyed a prosperous life as decorated Soviet partisans, but wanted to leave Pinsk, Poland, which reminded them of “a graveyard.” Morris and Faye lived in the Landsberg displaced persons camp in Germany for the next three years and immigrated to Canada in 1948.

I’ve been sort of compiling notes for how to successfully shoplift from different retail chains and other general tips for shoplifting. If i can assemble them into readable format would that be something people are interested in? Which comm would it go in? I’m talking about from “where to put objects on your body based on size” to “how to leave without paying and have the employees wave goodbye as you go”

Started reading “The Will to change Men, Masculinity, and Love” for the book club discussion and damn… The preface is already hitting me hard. But I’ll leave my thoughts for the actual discussion.

I wonder how many times my friend said “coffee is for closers” in the month after we saw Glengarry Glen Ross. She said it to me like a dozen times and we’re not even in the same country.

if you told me that mint was an alien species or like genetically engineered to take over ecosystems I’d believe you, this shit’s wild

I rooted a mint cutting in a small pot maybe like a month, month and a half ago? and it’s just popped off, and you can see all the fucking rhizomes and stolons and shit just like, going all crazy

within a month this little pot is basically a writhing mass of plant tendrils just trying to burst out of containment

    I wanna plant it somewhere

I picked up Resident Evil 6 on extreme sale to see if it was fun-bad, but it’s pretty bad-bad.

I’d heard that this was the one where they made it into a big dumb action movie, o I’d hoped for some entertainment. The problem is that it’s a tedious, frustrating game for such a boring movie.

Extreme case of Cop Power Creep too, by this point in the story everyone is a double triple secret special covert agent and they all work with cops and soldiers and secret service and it’s just one of those Hans Zimmer Whitehouse has fallen movies with zombies.

That movie has revived up old arguments in my social circle about musicals. The former theatre-kids (either in reality or in spirit) are haranguing those of us who dislike musicals. They want us to join in on the alleged fun. It’s leading to genuine tensions. Most of us musical-dislikers would be okay with a 90 minute movie, but we are not going to suffer for almost twice that runtime.

One of them still holds a grudge against me for the time we saw 2022’s “Disenchanted” in the theatre as a group. I only went because otherwise four friends wouldn’t have had a drive to/from the movie. That theatre was on the edge of town with terrible public transportation. One of the guys was apparently hoping I’d join in with him for a romantic duet at some point as part of a big elaborate thing to ask me out. He took my being asleep for almost all of the movie as a personal rejection of his company. (My superpower is being able to quickly fall asleep in any sound environment.)

He’s a nice enough guy, cute, fit, but when I ask myself “can I see myself enjoying an evening alone in his company?” my answer to myself is “hell no” because the only time he stops talking is when he’s singing. We’re not a good match.

The Catholic church should try fighting the waning of its popularity by introducing warrior monks, maybe hold some kind of King of Iron Fist Tournament type of deal to choose the next pope?

A yearly catholic championship. It goes over the different fighting styles: judo, sumo, BJJ, MMA, karate, and TKD. The overall winner gets to work with the pope to make something canon to the faith.

Person A wants abortion to be permissible in the faith vs Person B demanding that Catholics have a duty to be up to date with One Piece

Once the pope is nominated after the tournament he then has to fight off 127 cardinals’ worth of covert assassination attempts. That or King of the Iron Pope is to the death

I was naively expecting the comments to be more balanced lol. Like it’s obviously asking too much of overworked delivery drivers (esp during holiday season ffs) to never block a bike lane. It’s also not that unreasonable for someone on a bike to cut across the street or sidewalk for that short of a distance. Although, I’d love if Amazon or whatever contractor got anonymized citations for these, that way they face consequences for overworking their drivers but couldn’t link it directly to individuals to punish them. But that seems impossible to implement.

Yeah, that seems like it’s probably a common occurrence. I feel like if someone lives on a busy street with bike lanes they should have the sense to just use a drop off location that’s almost definitely walking distance from them. Like idk why that discussion didn’t point out that people who think their deodorant should get a courier to their house had other options.

I think I mentioned it in there somewhere but I certainly did center the whole ‘wearing down my body’ part

I should have mentioned that they were asking me to pop out the side of my van blind into a bike lane

Also I think I’m about 65% of the way to causing a lethal aneurysm in that one guy demanding I ‘salute the flag’ by answering if I support Russia just by not answering and giving them shit about everything else they say. (e.g. they just posted the gay rainbow Putin so now we’re deconstructing the fact that what they did is in fact homophobic)

I find it really funny that Jesus Christ is a minor character in Jojo part 7. Like he just appears three times, and half of his lines are “Are you sure you want to shoot that guy Johnny?”

There’s multiple Jojo fighting games and yet Jesus is still not a playable character
