Faye Schulman, born on this day in 1919, was a Jewish partisan and photographer who took up arms against the Nazis who were responsible for killing her family.

On August 14th, 1942, the Germans killed 1,850 Jews from the “Lenin” ghetto (named after Lenin, Poland, where Faye was from), including her parents, sisters, and younger brother. Faye was spared for her ability to develop photographs, and the Nazis ordered Faye to develop their photographs of the massacre. Later, she cited taking a photo of her dead family in a mass grave as the impetus to take up arms.

During a partisan raid on the camp, Faye fled to the forests and joined the Molotava Brigade, a partisan group mostly comprised of escaped Soviet Red Army POWs. She was accepted because her brother-in-law had been a doctor and they were desperate for anyone who knew anything about medicine. Faye served the group as a nurse from September 1942 to July 1944, even though she had no previous medical experience.

During another raid on the Lenin ghetto, Faye succeeded in recovering her old photographic equipment. During the next two years, she took over a hundred photographs, developing the medium format negatives under blankets and making “sun prints” during the day. While on missions, Faye buried the camera and tripod to keep it safe. Schulman is the only known Jewish partisan photographer from this era.

“I want people to know that there was resistance. Jews did not go like sheep to the slaughter. I was a photographer. I have pictures. I have proof.”

  • Faye Schulman

After liberation, Faye married Morris Schulman, also a Jewish partisan. Faye and Morris enjoyed a prosperous life as decorated Soviet partisans, but wanted to leave Pinsk, Poland, which reminded them of “a graveyard.” Morris and Faye lived in the Landsberg displaced persons camp in Germany for the next three years and immigrated to Canada in 1948.

I was naively expecting the comments to be more balanced lol. Like it’s obviously asking too much of overworked delivery drivers (esp during holiday season ffs) to never block a bike lane. It’s also not that unreasonable for someone on a bike to cut across the street or sidewalk for that short of a distance. Although, I’d love if Amazon or whatever contractor got anonymized citations for these, that way they face consequences for overworking their drivers but couldn’t link it directly to individuals to punish them. But that seems impossible to implement.

Also I think I’m about 65% of the way to causing a lethal aneurysm in that one guy demanding I ‘salute the flag’ by answering if I support Russia just by not answering and giving them shit about everything else they say. (e.g. they just posted the gay rainbow Putin so now we’re deconstructing the fact that what they did is in fact homophobic)

The Catholic church should try fighting the waning of its popularity by introducing warrior monks, maybe hold some kind of King of Iron Fist Tournament type of deal to choose the next pope?

Once the pope is nominated after the tournament he then has to fight off 127 cardinals’ worth of covert assassination attempts. That or King of the Iron Pope is to the death

I find it really funny that Jesus Christ is a minor character in Jojo part 7. Like he just appears three times, and half of his lines are “Are you sure you want to shoot that guy Johnny?”

There’s multiple Jojo fighting games and yet Jesus is still not a playable character

Really feels like the Barotrauma devs were told that fire needs oxygen, and then stopped listening before being told that it also requires fuel. Fire might as well be ballast flora or covid for how unimpeded it spreads despite all logic.

I’m almost always on team spider and happily let them hang out inside. Except I felt genuinely horrible last week when I sprayed a black widow that wanted to hang out next to where my cats get their water/food. It was an ugly scene and it wasn’t over quickly.

Watched Gladiator 2 last night on a CAM release

    spoiler

Movie sucked; did a Star Wars Sequels thing of ‘Somehow, the empire we defeated 16 years ago has returned’ and most of the cast was returning from the original in the exact same plot as the first. Just awful. I didn’t think Denzell did a great job at all, and his veneers outshined his performance.

My spouse and I had a better time with the subtitles that were generated by AI apparently. It randomly renamed some characters: Gracchus == Crackers, Macronus == Macronuts. And various other translation errors.

I put my foot down on this movie and said ‘we’re not gonna see another stupid unneeded cash-grab sequel’ and glad I did (not pay for it). Beetlejuice 2 was the last one we saw and it was also awful (and we paid for it)

I posted a story on my IG (i know i know why fucking use meta) about Kamala’s disastrous drop in support and an acquaintance linked me one article about how republicans were using propaganda so it’s not her fault, and she actually wanted to end the war. And I’m trying to find a calm and nice way to say that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were both rabid imperialist dogs and nothing else.

I recently collected all the books recommended/mentioned by Matt Christman into my library app and I’m listening to Nixonland and it is so good. I miss Matt so much in these times. I loved his stroke of genius poem (Will got me a groan out of me for that one).

Anyways, thinking of listening to his cushvlogs or getting that essay collection when it comes out.

👎 company is now fully on-board the Microsoft sharepoint train, meaning there is a “Home” section where you can see the date and time each person in the sharepoint group edited or opened a file

Just finding new ways to do surveillance at job which is unequivocally bullshit lol
