Thank fuck. Those stupid internet points were a weird pissing contest anyway
Yeah making discussions into addictions, not because of the subject, but because of the good boy points was always stupid.
God I hated all the joke comments that wound up at the top with thousands of upvotes. Just one big circle jerk on many serious topics. I’m sure it’ll still occur in Lemmy to some extent but hopefully the lack of karma will help keep it down.

If there’s no karma, then what are the two numbers that “Thunder” displays next to my account age?
There is a score kept in the backend, it just has no frontend in default lemmy and only exists if instance devs want to do something custom with it. Some apps are probably using it.
So essentially karma that hasn’t been weighted & calculated (you receive more karma if your post / comment skyrockets early on if I’m not mistaken) and that isn’t (yet) used as a gate for posting in communities
There are a lot more ways for community marshalls to gate posting in communities when they’re running it properly as opposed to over on reddit where us moderators are fairly limited in the actions we can take. Using karma as a gate will also be somewhat ineffective as instance owners will exist that simply create karma for people.
It’s also a fairly unpleasant thing to begin with. Coming from a bunch of bazinga techbro libertarians turning all discussion into a “market”. If you accept that gameification isn’t going away there’s still a good amount of research showing downvotes only hurt platforms and discussion rather than improve it.
Yep, The Memmy IOS app has a lot of details on the profile page
Is thunder a Lemmy browser?
Yes, but it’s only available via GitHub which means you gotta update it manually… No PlayStore or F-Droid atm afaik
If Android wasn’t whack it would be a very simple script to update it automatically from the GitHub, compiled from source.
Yeah :')
I’ve got the same with Memmy. I think these apps just add your upvotes and downvotes together to give you a score. Reddit, on the other hand, had a complex karma system, where the more upvotes/downvotes your post would get, the less those would be worth, so you couldn’t just get a massive karma score from just a couple popular posts
Yeah, and didn’t early upvotes count more than later ones?
This is why I don’t use thunder.
It also made participating in smaller subreddits a little less satisfying, even though I liked the conversations in those more.
There was just something about a random comment in a giant subreddit suddenly getting me sooo many points, more than I had made in months!
Logically I knew karma didn’t really matter, but big numbers gud!
I agree with your text I’m going to give you some good boy points
Give me all your updoots

Sent from Connect for Lemmy.
I feel like I’m 13 again trying to figure out reddit, lol.
Was able to do it once, can do it again…
All your upvotes belong to us.
are belong to us.
Who says I can’t have Karma!? Maybe I’ll get good luck by getting a lot of updoots here on Lemmy, just like how it worked on Reddit! Right?
I don’t know what’s going on here and at this point I’m to afraid to ask
Just remember, if you have a hot take , they don’t just ban you, they ban your entire server

Oh it’s coming lol. They already track vote counts on the back end. Several third party apps even show total “point” for posts and comments.
Example from my profile on Memmy:
And Thunder
Interesting all the ones I use don’t.
We can’t stop it I guess… That’s the power of open source
You want to stop, having a sorting algorithm ?
If there is no karma here, then how do I have a good afterlife in lemmy? /s
Fun fact, the Lemmy backend does actually track karma, it just doesn’t show it anywhere.
I believe it’s still in the API if you know how to call it. Some community-made clients still show it I think. We no longer want to draw attention to any sort of cumulative points system at least by default, because we didn’t want to gamify the platform and cause people to obsess over that number instead of participating for the sake of participating, nor do we want to make Lemmy addictive. Post and comment points are enough and even they can cause problems.
Hopefully that means no repost bots.
But when I see people upvoting my shitposts, it still gives me the happy monkey hormones. Isn’t that what it’s all about?
No. You do the hokey pokey and you turn yourself around and THAT’S what it’s all about!
But you can check the number of upvotes and downvotes again, that’s nuce.
What do you mean, “I have no karma here”?
The wonderful downward arrows that you so love to click, what is that?
You have no karma here, Jackie Weaver!
Where are my customizable avatar??? WHEEEEREEEEE??? 😫
