How does that work? You can’t insure yourself against perpetrating a crime.

This is for churches, not specific ministers. Businesses are allowed to insure themselves against their employees committing crimes.

But the fact that abuse and molestation in the church is so common that this is something remotely entertained is absurd.

Aah, okay. That makes sense. I mean it’s insane but it makes more sense than an individual being able to insure themselves in case they commit a crime.

AFAIK its some kind of insurance to prevent bankruptcy of finantial doom after having a legal case for child abuse.

Its one of the most fucked up distopian shit ever.

Correct this is civil liability insurance for lawsuits, basically. You can’t put businesses/organizations in jail but you can find them liable for damages. This would pay for lawyers and a certain maximum of court-ordered penalties, same as liability insurance for if someone slips and falls on a wet puddle in your store.

Honestly it’s probably depressingly low. It’s hard to prove and get justice especially as a private plaintiff who doesn’t have the resources of a district attorney, and the payout would be for suffering which juries aren’t great at calculating a value for.

Hopefully that will change and there will be much more pressure on these trusted institutions to behave.
