Feels like a click-baity headline. What does “dominate and overwhelm the world” mean here? Feels like it’s been written to be vague enough to imply it might be an existential threat without actually saying so.

It means that the variant is very likely to quickly spread across the population as we saw happen with Delta. High rate of infection with reduced effectiveness of vaccination leads to much higher rate of hospitalization. Given how things are going in places like US currently, I do think being concerned is a valid position to take.
