Just to let you guys know, we just merged the PR that allows a Discourse category to follow any actor in the fediverse, including other Discourse categories. Yes, that means you can now federate a category between two (or three, or more) Discourses. There’s a few more PRs in the pipeline as part of this phase, but that was a big one. Here’s a video me federating across two Discourse instances and a Mastodon instance running on my computer
Well, no one seems to be implementing groups over the protocol because they’re aiming for mastodon support, so it’s gonna be like this for a while it seems
EDIT: which is kinda insane when it comes to federating a forum. How does that makes sense in anyway other than through groups?! Like, I’m betting this federation plug-in isn’t useful outside of discourse unless/until it works with lemmy/groups … in much the same way lemmy isn’t very useful on mastodon.
Wordpress federation is kinda similar IMO just less so with their choice of being a “user” rather than a “group”.
But all together, we’re seeing a flattening of what ActivityPub is capable of as everyone aims for Mastodon’s limited take on the fediverse.
