Fun fact, the reason why gasoline was called gas is because back in the day, its only use was as lamp fuel. It was much less dense and had a much higher vapour pressure than kerosene, the other common lamp fuel, and gasoline (aka white gas) lamps took advantage of that with a special tube that boiled the fuel into vapour (a gas) so it could be used to light a gas mantle, which would be much brighter than a bare flame for the same amount of fuel burned.
