      It’s a bit libertarian/radlib but still better than Twitter…

It can be whatever you want it to be as anyone can host their own instance. It’s just like lemmy here but for twitter/facebook.

Yes, the fediverse is awesome. I’m sad I didn’t discover it earlier…

It’s like if you could answer to an Instagram post and subscribe to a YouTube channel from your Twitter account. And if you wanted to make your own Twitter where you’re the only one who can register an account and block any site that mentions anime, you could.

None of these words are in the Bible.

          https://fediverse.party/en/fediverse/

To put it simple the Fediverse is a collection of libre, open services that are all based on a common protocol called “ActivityPub”. It’s similar like lemmy here.

For example let’s say you’re running a Server that hosts a Mastodon instance and you have an account there. You can go to any other server running an instance of a service that complies with the ActivityPub protocol (PeerTube, Pleroma, Funkwhale, etc.) and just interact with that account there. You can go to any video on any PeerTube instance and like and comment. You can go to any post on any Pleroma instance and favorite it and reply to it. You can go and follow any person anywhere on the fediverse. Etc. And anyone from those instances can do the same with posts on your Server/Instance.

Note that a Server can literally just be a 10 year old PC sitting in someone’s closet. And if that machine happens to go down only the instance(s) running on that machine will become inaccessible.

If someone happens to not like you they can block you from their Server/Instance but that’s about it. It’s similar to someone blocking your phone number. This makes any federated service immune to the so called “cancel culture”.

None of these services mentioned are profit driven. Everything is open and community driven. There is no big corporation collecting your data here. You can download the full source code of any project in the fediverse, study it and compile it yourself. Maybe make a few modifications here and there.

If you’re curious about this I really recommend to just pick some projects that seem interesting and look for some public instances and play around with them. Go to https://fediverse.party/ and click on some stuff, they keep track of public instances. Here is a very basic description of some of the services:

Mastodon, Pleroma, Misskey: Similar to twitter

Hubzilla, Friendica, Diaspora, GNU Social: Similar to facebook

          Pixelfed: Similar to Instagram/Snapchat

          Funkwhale: Similar to Soundcloud/Spotify

          PeerTube: Similar to YouTube

There are probably more out there. Anyone can just create their own from scratch.
