I wouder why Russian companies tries to use alternatives to google like Harmony OS which are not ready for usage in Smartphones, instead of trying ungoogle Android OSes like cyagenomod / lineage or even Postmarket OS…

I imagine having support from Huawei will be useful long term. If they use one of the open source forks then they’re on the hook for supporting it. I’m guessing that Harmony OS must be getting fairly usable at this point if they’re evaluating it.

Russia has positive expirience in having own linux distos forks (Rosa, Alt, …), that’s why I thought they’ll also pick up some fork and will maintain it.

I’m guessing this isn’t a state initiative though, but just a particular company looking at the cheapest way to get off Android. I do expect both Russia and China are going to start investing heavily in Linux at state level though since any proprietary stuff like Windows is now seen as a national security risk. So we could see a nice boost for open source going forward.

iirc Harmony OS is very usable, and its essentially just a skinned android like MIUI.

Harmony is a degoogled android with a proprietary replacement for Google Services (Huawai Services).
