That’s awesome! Space energy delivery is something out of science fiction. I’ll look into it!

That would be a good feature request for Jeorba or Infinity for Lemmy!
True! Doom is quite relative! Regarding open source AI, history has shown that for any new emerging technology there will always be a group of people who advocate for it, along with another group who tries to restrict it.
As an example, did you know the US government a few decades back had encryption listed in the same catagory as Tomahawk cruise missiles? They argued that it was weapons grade material as it could be used by terrorists and so restricted it. A similar argument was made in regards to open source Operating systems like Linux compared to Windows.
History repeats itself, and we find a similar situation to open source AI. The lengths the government would have to go to to fully restrict AI would bring about an oppressive totalitarian regime that destroys any values held prior. It is a complicated topic, but in short open source AI is the way forward, as trust in centralized entities has shown throughout history to be poorly placed as it leads to abuse by the few.
Thanks. A similar comment to yours is the reason why I wanted to engage in the community.
China seems to be able to easily start and complete megaprojects without much bureaucracy. It is a trait I wish the west would inspire to. Of course there are also traits that are not as appealing and should be avoided.
Regarding fossil fuels, I am beyond surprised how both superpowers are not placing significant funding into fusion. ITER in theory (and almost certainty in practice) has shown that you can generate a 1< Q factor for energy projection.
Imagine a Manhattan project for fusion instead of nuclear weapons. A project to this scale would very likely be able to fully transistion the world into clean, reliable, and cheap energy that doesn’t require batteries, sunlight, or natural terrain to exploit.
The amount of lives you would save from free energy is also incredible! Place a few reactors in Africa and you have a way to desalinate ocean water, as well as provide free energy for food generation.
Agreed! I was thinking more about twitter toxicity when it came to infighting or those echo chambers on reddit where only 1 certain view is allowed and people who share different views are ridiculed.
But the kind of infighting like for sports is great though! It makes the community more lively.
Do you have any resources or suggestions for Linux hardening?
Impressive. Thanks for sharing this! China has done some technological incredible feats.
The tiktok algorithm has been the best algorithm of any platform in my opinion. While the content will vary depending on the person, and perhaps others may judge another’s feed as poor taste, tiktok does do a good job at providing users content in what they want.
With that said, use YouTube revanced manager to patch tiktok for ad free experience!
A LAN party on something like Minecraft would be great if you could somehow avoid trolls.
The freedom of expression is relieving and oddly something I forgot existed. There has been so much censorship and polticial correctness that it has ruined what made the old internet fun.
I would love to see Youtube be next in federation migration!
There is a significant difference between constructive criticism and infighting. Infighting is often fueled by emotion and can be seen as toxic, harsh, and genuinely unappealing.
Constructive criticism on the other hand is a great way to provide another view point to someone who may not agree with you. It is up to them to decide on how they want to use this new perspective.
It has been quite emotional to see this community grow! I was a lurker here when Lemmy only had hundreds of users and to see such a vibrant and diverse set of instances form has been wonderful! I hope to see this platform returning some of the nostalgia from the Golden Age of the Internet. An internet for fun!
Here is my take on karma. Karma gives users an incentive to post content based more around grabbing attention than quality.
I think it is for the best that karma doesn’t exist here as it allows users to post what they feel without an alterior motive such as gaining internet points.
Subnautica has been amazing! It is one of the best open world games ever made and I highly recommend it!
There was a time where the internet was a place for fun. Purely fun! No profit-based platforms, no mass abuse of users, no privacy violating practices, no forced ID verification, and no political correctness censorship enmass.
This age was known as The Golden Age of the Internet. It was something I saw gradually disappear like a frog being slowly boiled in water.
I’d like the hope we can one day come back to this era. The Golden Age was an escape from reality, while this corporate ran bullshit has been nothing but profit focused greed with a constant reminder of reality.
I cannot express in words how amazing the Golden Age was. We never knew we were in it until it was one day gone. Decentralization and freedom from centralized entities may allow the Internet the perhaps return to the Golden Age. An age where the Internet purely exists for everyone to have fun in and be able to express themselves freely without censorship.
Wow, that’s incredible! I didn’t know China used double the energy of the US. Energy usage is a good proxy for how advanced a civilization and double the 2nd largest is very impressive!
