Their “shop like a billionaire” catchphrase for buying cheap ripped-off crap gave off red flags and latestagecapitalism vibes. It’s frustrating to see how many people fell for the marketing and have actually downloaded and used this app.

The Fediverse is essentially a collection of platforms (such as Lemmy, Mastodon, Pixelfed, and more). Each platform has a number of instances that are hosted separately, hence the decentralized nature of the Fediverse. For example, Lemmy is a platform, and Lemmy instances include Lemmy.world, Lemmy.ml, kbin.social, sh.itjust.works, and more. Others have posted links to lists of instances that you can look through.

As a geoscientist and someone who produces maps (and also just as a human who understands science), this particular flavor of willful ignorance blows my mind. It makes me sad for the kids who trust their parents and will eventually have to unlearn this shit or carry on fundamentally misunderstanding the Earth. I also can’t help but wonder what jank projection is being used here to display the continents in 2D lol. Looks like a polar projection centered on the north pole which is why the continents are distorted around the edges ending up with a “wall of ice” all around which is really just a very distorted Antarctica. There’s a reason we don’t use polar projections to represent the Earth on a global scale.

Swan Light by Phoebe Rowe - I really enjoyed this book telling two connected stories that occurred 100 years apart in parallel, centering around a lighthouse in Newfoundland that collapsed into the ocean and the search to find it.

The Weight of Air by David Poses - Autobiographical book advocating for harm reduction approaches in treating addiction. I was sad to see that the author passed away last year, it’s clear that his book has helped a lot of people.

Thank you for your perspective. This day is still celebratory to me but it definitely invites more reflection and awareness than ever before. I hope fellow Canadians are also pausing today to reflect on our past, both good and bad, and the values we want to hold as we move forward.

Not in the same way as before, that’s for sure. It would mean that they only did it after people protested and disrupted the site for an extended period of time. They obviously don’t want Reddit to be what we want it to be. I’m sure they would still try to subvert our will and impose theirs in different ways. Plus, this has made me expand and actually seek out exciting new communities and platforms with new ideas. These communities are filled with people who have similar opinions on what happened and how to move forward to create spaces we want to participate in. Whatever happens with Reddit can’t undo that.

It’s funny reading posts that say something along the lines of “I’ve always used the reddit app and it’s fine, I didn’t even know there were third-party apps”. I get this might be astroturfing or bots but if not, congrats on not having a clue, I guess.

I’ve been on reddit since 2011, now here I am. I’ll keep using my third-party reddit app until I can’t anymore, maybe occasionally old reddit (until they shut that down too, most likely). I would have been entirely willing to pay a reasonable amount per month or year to access the reddit API in a third-party app, but alas. Sad to see greed ruining good things, as it does, although I am enjoying seeing the resulting backlash and shitshow over there lol
