  • I would say so. If anarchism at its core is the removal of hierarchy, it makes sense to say decentralization is the road towards anarchism.

It’s easy to become infatuated with the freedom of the fediverse. I slowly reject centralized platforms for the federated communities because despite their smaller size, it just feels good to use.

I’m relatively new to the fediverse but I see fediverse instances as being in a horizontal relationship rather than a vertical one.

Yeah the whole flash media and configure bios step is what gets people. If it comes preinstalled and the distro is stable you can just play with it. I think the decks gonna be real big for this experience.

  • Reddit is free if you don’t value your data, freedom, or dignity.

On corporate media sites, you do what the CEO tells you to, or you get ejected. This means your entire social life is in the hands of a select few CEOs who dictate the policies of the world’s largest digital communities. With one decision you can be completely ostracized from the national conversation.

On the fediverse, your participation is dictated by grassroots decision making. If you are banned from an instance, just host your own. If your ban was unjustified in the eyes of the wider community, they will switch to your instance or one that federates with you. If not, then you were in the wrong in the eyes of the wider community.

Under corporate media, decisions may or may not be congruent with the desires of the wider community. But it will always be congruent with their profit model.

On federated media, decisions made that are incongruent with the desires of community will lead to an exodus to another instance on the same platform. There is no CEO who tells you what to do. How you use Mastodon, Lemmy and other federated communities is entirely in your hands.
