I disagree since the stigma comes from people who think anyone with an anime pic is automatically racist - which isn’t true, especially since I’ve seen a lot of anime pfps who are normal online. This whole “anime pfp bad” nonsense stems from the anime fandom - especially K-On - somehow being a magnet for the far-right and antisemites of all people. One theory I have is that anime fits well with their reactionary vision of the world similar to 40k.

Honestly, I don’t trust anime pfps because I know full goddamn well that’s a favorite avatar archetype for feds. You see somebody you perceive as a ‘weeb’ with like… A Hetalia pfp or some shit talking on some MONSTROUS geopolitics, that motherfucker’s probably posing out of Eglin, Langley, or Dulles.

I’m not gonna deny I get nervous when I see other anime PFPs. For one, most anime sucks, so I’m wondering what’s in it for them. Is it fetishizing Japanese culture the way you mentioned, is it being an actual predator who fetishizes high schoolers, are they into some of the series that have misanthropic malthusian or fascistic themes, is there actual nostalgia for Imperial Japan, or feudalism for some damn reason. Also there’s the whole incel obsession with Japan which is distasteful to mention and I will gloss over.

When I do it, it’s cool, and charming. 🥸

Most anime pfps depend on what anime character they use. People with the Dragon Ball (I use Broly pfp) and Touhou pfps somewhat can be okay, but I have found many Hindutva genocide lovers using Eren from Shingeki no Kyojin with a tilak (red/orange mark on forehead) easy to spot on Twitter.

I agree, the stigma is nonsensical and almost as bad as Nazi style stereotypical thinking of “le anime degeneracy”.

Anime horseshoe theory, rabid weebs and rabid antiweebs are incredibly similar.

Homogenizing “anime” as if it were a genre of cartoon and not the medium itself native to Japan is annoying as hell, mostly comes from ignorance but still very frustrating even as a white guy who digs some anime. It’s like the anti-globalist version of hating on cartoons as a medium lol. Some cartoons are bangers, just like some anime! And some are dogshit! Just like live action shows!

Nobody argue we should ban the cinema and movies because things like “Jud Süß” were made and hollywood is still doing not much better things, yet a lot of people do want such for anime, even here.

I would ask subscribers to this anti-anime revisionist ideological current whether it is more cringe to enjoy cartoon, or more cringe to seethe and froth at the mouth and shit and cum every time it’s mentioned by name.

I believe the levels of cringe permeating from and within either side is obvious.

(Enjoy the cartoon just don’t be fucking weird about it lol)

  • Welp, it’s not always the case.

For some reason most of them have insane takes because of their politics irl, not anime pfp, they just use it for some reason, many of my childhood animes were ruined by idiots on internet, including K-ON, but it’s not always the case, don’t hate certain animes just because of libs who use it as pfp to probably mask that they are secretly fascists(and then reveal themselves in like 3-4 comments).

I think people judge more if you have girl pfp than say a pokemon which i have. I guess people assume weird stuff.

The odds of an Anime Profile being a federal agent are just way too high for me to take them seriously any more. It’s way too likely to be a psyop, plain and simple.

      What utter ignorant nonsense.

Because, you know, all anime is just children’s show like the teletubbies, pokemon and never, ever, on god’s green earth, ever portray “adult things” like great amounts of blood and violence (Elfen Lied), political matters (Code Geass) and/or sexual things (Most Mainstream/Popular Modern Anime).

There are barely any adults out there that actually watch shit like Barney, Sesame Street or the Teletubbies. Even if they do, it’s usually to relive some kind of nostalgia. Wake the fuck up and stop policing what others like; like some kind of reich-wing reactionary parroting shit like how watching anime makes you a beta male or whatever. Or go the hell back to /leftypol/.

There are more important matters at hand instead of shaming others for liking something.

    -anime pfp bad

even when i’m such a weeaboo, i know that anime is not as conservative as the far-right loonies try to make it, i mean:

-dragon ball is about a low class warrior surpassing the nobility, a space realtor and a fascist scientist

-evangelion is about fighting god and the angels because “human spirit”

-ranma 1/2 is about people identifying themselves as another beings

-some of the most popular subgenres are based on LGBT issues: yuri or yaoi and futanari

-the otaku subculture is a…subculture: something isolated and criticized by the mainstream conservative average japanese, but dank memery makes people think crazy-ass ideas

    • I think this was sarcasm that got mistaken for a real position. Munrock included things like having letters in your username or using sentences in your posts. Seeing these things as the markers of a “potentially unhinged lunatic” is an obviously absurd position, as that would mean pretty much any use of language would make one a potential unhinged lunatic. This position is so ridiculous that I can’t see even the most rabid chud believing it, which makes me conclude it must be a joke.

Yeah I thought it was pretty obvious. Also pointedly included myself in the list with my pfp.

And my point: you can’t judge someone by a profile pic or username without also reading what they’re actually saying. Unfortunately you can’t rely on the internet to do that.

To try and cut through the beef I just want to say that regardless of our opinions on anime, I think we can all agree that:

    1. We all do and enjoy things that other people find cringey.
    1. Anime is just an artform like any other. Culturally it has stereotypically attracted a lot of people who are unsavory, but the same could be said with a large amount of fans of any hobby, interest, franchise, media, etc.

I see both sides to the discourse. Personally I like a few animes but it’s not a main interest of mine. But who would I be to criticize? I shove rap down the throats of everybody in my life. Ya’all should see my Instagram stories, I’m sure many people would call it “cringey.” 🤷‍♂️ we all got lanes to fill. I’m conflicted too because on one hand I think socialism should be marketable to ALL people so any sort of distinguishable flavor to its adherents to me is a negative, but at the same time I highly value people being themselves and targeting the niches they know best.
