Hi, author of the Piped link bot here! I think this is meme great feedback to throw light on some issues on the experience with the bot. 😂 I’ll open an issue at https://github.com/TeamPiped/lemmy-piped-link-bot to track this later.
It’s THE kavin, great to see you on here! You’re the one that really rocks!
Thanks for your work on Piped. Youtube links here go straight to NewPipe so I’ve been able to avoid all of Google’s latest shenanigans courtesy of your team.
It is very annoying tbh. I dont want to always suck your resources, and Youtube just works with privacy clients currently. So when they dont work anymore, then this may be useful. But then Piped would probably be blocked too.
I appreciate the work but its quite annoying that every youtube link gets a piped link instead, even though I purposefully use youtube links as Grayjay, Newpipe, Pipepipe, Freetube etc. work just fine.
I find the bot very useful when I’m on a device without Newspipe or whatever like an IPhone. I know it’s piped bot, but could it also provide a invidious link as sometimes I run into a speed/bug problem with piped (probably because web view sucks, if I open a link in a proper browser the bugs are gone)
I’ve seen those piped links all the time but I’m still not really sure what the advantage is, or what problem it’s solving.
Would you mind explaining a bit about why you made piped, and why I should probably use it?
Google can’t track the videos you watched using Piped, all they see is the Piped server fetching it from them to deliver it to you. Also no ads, and you can control things like recommendations to not get sucked into an endless YT loop.
They never work for me 😢
more privacy respecting i guess
If you like free software & promoting free services (as in freedom) why is your source code on Microsoft GitHub’s proprietary social network / Git forge where accounts + ToS agreements are required to contribute & the platform has anti-features trying to force engagement on users? At a minimum, I would expect a mailing list to send patches or mirroring to a free (as in freedom) forge if not an all-out migration.
On what grounds do you expect anything of someone working on an open source project? If your goal really is to spread awareness about (completely valid imo) concerns regarding GitHub, I’d suggest you not to do it in such a hostile way.
What I expected to see is not the same as what I expect someone to do.
Mailing lists used to be the norm, more free software has been migrating… but also in this specific case the maker is promoting user not use a Google-owned proprietary platform while hosting on a Microsoft-owned proprietary platform which smells of hypocrisy–especially when with code forges there are several great alternative options.
Notice that I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m saying that if you want to get your point across, it’s unhelpful to take an offensive stance against the person you’re trying to convince.
Should we be saying “pwetty pwease”? Publicly shaming is a fair way to get a point across.
When it works I’ll use piped and shit, but half the time it doesn’t work lmao
It has never worked for me. On any platform. Not one time. I blocked that fucking bot months ago.
Because it’s reliant on special servers. Just use Freetube or Newpipe, both handle the video extraction locally.
Locally? How is that private???
In my experience, that’s being a bit generous.
That’s has to do with the backend server that’ve been chosen at the preference page. Servers becomes unavailable all the time, and the frontend don’t change a server when it happens. Just choose a few servers that works well and you trust, and switch back and forth when needed.
One advantage of linking a YouTube video in an aggregator setting is if the video goes viral, everyone is spamming Google’s server for delivery instead of hammering smaller services. Video is pretty expensive, so for now I see no issue abusing YouTube (assuming everyone here is already ad-blocking & DNS sinking anyhow).
Yeah, those 300-odd lemmy uses are really gonna be a huge burden on Google’s resources
Implying Lemmy is the only link aggregator? There are others, informal group & DM sharing as well.
Peertube uses the torrent protocol to distribute the load among active viewers.
I found a $15/mo server with unlimited (10Gbps) bandwidth for my personal instance. It would only become expensive if were to open it up for public registrations and use a lot of cloud storage space. Anything I upload can theoretically be viewed a billion times at no extra cost.
That’s still a lot of monthly money for a lot of folks which hurts accessibility for many, not all. The fact that we can’t agree on codecs throws yet another wrench in things as you need multiple resolutions & formats. I’m happy it exists tho & uses distributed serving.
What’s the codecs problem?
In my case, I was already paying for this VPS to host other services, so the cost of adding peertube was essentially nothing. The server has enough storage and bandwidth to support dozens of users and hundreds videos, so the cost per person would be pretty low.
There’s a cost to doing the (re)encoding & storing multiple version of video. It’s relatively not more data to send one codec versus another, but storage & processing aren’t free either (especially with AV1 requiring hardware encoding unless you want to grind forever on a file).
Oh I see, you’re referring to the HLS and WebTorrent formats.
Unfortunately it’s only webtorrents, which pretty much no torrenter uses. The cost of hosting videos is still entirely on single servers.
I don’t understand why anyone would use piped bot’s links at all.
I’m on the boat where I think it’s better to use an addon or something to rewrite the URLS in your browser automatically rather than relying on a bot to do it. Firefox has “Redirector” plugin which can rewrite all youtube links to whatever invidious/piped/etc. instance you want.
I think it’s for awareness. I’ll never forget Piped exists now.
You setup the automatic redirector… You’ll forget youtube exists, since it works browser-wide… and will interpret ALL youtube links.
I know, and I use that. But on a IOS device I haven’t found a good way to do this
You can’t register urls with apps on IOS?
No, but there are no apps and iOS is locked down
This is a bit of me-thing, but yeah, I’m annoyed that YouTube is the way it is. It’s non-trivial to embed videos from there without violating the GDPR, so embedded videos are basically not a thing these days on general-purpose social media.
And personally, I also want to avoid the tracking from clicking through to a YouTube video and Google encourages long-ass videos, so I always hesitate before clicking through. Also, people without ad blockers go through a completely different circle of hell before a video starts.
Basically, I miss the days when memes could just be short videos. Where everyone could see on the embed that, oh, it’s a 30 second video, I can watch that. And then they’d just click play, without leaving the page.
I do understand that likely no one would care to provide the bandwidth for dumb meme videos on PeerTube either. But yeah, I just dream of that being a thing.
Ended up installing newpipe (or other app of your choice) and set it as the default app for YouTube video links 🤷 Edit: and of course you can set it as default for other sites, including peertube
Where can I find newpipe?
You can download it on f-droid: https://f-droid.org/packages/org.schabi.newpipe/
NewPipe is the MVP. my partner played a link on regular YT the other day and there were five ads for a ~20 minute video. absolutely disgusting.
Oh boy, can’t wait to see what someone commented on my post
Oh boy, can’t wait to see if the commenter upvoted my reply for the effort.
If I could find a good Peertube instance, I’d take it upon myself to reupload everything I like there. I collect the 1080p(60h if available) clips locally for Kodi anyway…
I’m out of the loop on this. I’ve seen piped bot and looked into peertube a bit, what’s the appeal of it? Is it mainly to avoid ads?
Piped lets you view youtube videos without being tracked by google (and I guess without ads, though pretty sure uBlock Origin will do that anyway).
Peertube is like an alternative site to youtube. It’s a different place to post your video (you can’t use it to watch YouTube videos to my knowledge). The site is federated like Lemmy, and it uses bittorrent to download videos so people viewing the video at the same time will send part of the data to each other, reducing load on the server.

This is mostly right, I think I’d only clarify that it’s not a singular site, much like Lemmy isn’t, as instead it’s more site software to spin up a YouTube-like video hosting site. Also you’re right that you can’t use it to watch videos as you might via Piped/Invidious, unless the creator has also posted their video to a PeerTube site/instance.
Last little point that’s not super important to know for regular folks is that it’s not using bittorrent for helping distribute video loads, it’s WebRTC. Still peer to peer, just a different approach to it.
Sorry you’re right, site isn’t the right word but I hoped the reference to lemmy would explain it.
In regards to WebRTC, isn’t it bittorrent over WebRTC which allows bittorrent in a browser?
PeerTube uses the BitTorrent protocol to share bandwidth between users by default to help lower the load on the server
Ah…Yeah, that’s what I get for skimming. Tbh it’s a little confusing, but thankfully it’s not stuff viewers need to know necessarily.
I believe peertube is part of the fediverse
That piped bot is great, and highly appreciated by me.
Here’s a little hack if you do have to use youtube:
Every ad: you swipe down, close video, restart,… After a couple of times doing that, the abuse-filter kicks in and it will just show you the video. If you keep doing that a while, ads just stop for a while as it thinks it’s being abused. 😅
Probably will stop working one day too, but still works for me today.
from experience, none of yall click on anything but the youtube link.
I only click on yewtube links.
What experience?
Grayjay, Freetube and Newpipe work.
So just use Googles resources, build decentralized identities (@ all content creators!) and you are just fine for the dooms day when Youtube uses DRM or something
Odysee is better than a youtube frontend
Unfortunately it’s based on crypto and is almost entirely right wing propaganda
