China's military said on Thursday it had monitored and driven away a U.S. destroyer that illegally entered waters around the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea.
Even if we go along with the version that Paracel Islands belong to Vietnam, that still doesn’t explain what a US warship is doing there. Last time I checked Vietnam wasn’t a US colony either.
It’s a dispute for China and Vietnam to resolve. US has no business in this. And if you think Vietnam is partial to US in any way, what else is there to tell you.
From what I can tell, neither country has a particularly strong claim to them. It’s just that the South China Sea has a strong strategic value, both militarily and as a passage for shipping goods. The US has for decades been doing freedom of navigation operations with the aim of disrupting any norm around disputed claims, particularly when island building is involved.

It’s pretty clear that while both parties claim sovereignty, their strongest common ground is that the US doesn’t belong there.
The same Vietnam that has excellent relations with China you mean, and where China is currently building infrastructure?
