      There have been a few historical cases of open source projects getting bought out, then a community fork is made, and development energy moves over to the fork. MariaDB, Libreoffice, Hedgedoc, CentOS are a few I can think of.

      In the real life this is quite common. Sometimes works (OpenOffice -> LibreOffice, MySQL -> MariaDB) sometimes it doesn’t.
