With my main circle of friends we use Skype a lot, and we’re used to the grid view showing 6+ people all together. Hopefully, Telegram will figure out a good UI to display a grid layout even when you’re in portrait mode. From the video Durov posted, it looks like the grid layout is visible just when you tilt your phone, while in portrait the app will show you just who’s currently speaking. Not a big deal personally, but I’m dealing with people who are very sensitive to this kind of things and being able to view everyone (or most of the people, like 4/5 out of 6+ participants) who’s currently connected would be very nice
I’ve never used Discord for video calls, how many people does it show simultaniously while in grid view? What’s the default view?

I haven’t used Discord for a while now, but last time I used it (and what I can remember) they use a grid view as default.
