    Do we really need ‘taken’ in quotes? I’m pretty sure everyone knows by now that stealing data doesn’t actually remove the data, and that identity theft doesn’t mean you no longer have a name.

    Do you think people would like to use bridges built by a company that claims it has built dozens of bridges using “methods that have been scrutinized by reputable engineering firms” but also “cannot be disclosed as that would reveal trade secrets”? No?

    I will never understand why public infrastructure IT is not done openly with established methods and (free) software, instead of buying hidden, proprietary boxes that always turn out to have massive flaws.

      The difference is social precedent.

      The fight for transparency when computers were young either failed or wasn’t present at all.

      Now we’re left with the more difficult issue of actually trying to convince people that this is necessary.
