I slept terribly the other night and I found out I have some allergies. A bad night’s sleep really ruined my fitness and work routines. What are your best tips for a good night’s sleep?

My tip is to read a fiction book as your nighttime relaxing time.

Also, keep a hot water bottle at the foot of your bed.

I actually get the best sleep if I’ve been drinking that night. Not necessarily going to bed drink but usually after a night with some friends and booze. It very well could be that I’m just super relaxed though. Stress really fucks my sleep more than anything.

Depending on the type of pot though it can actually prevent you from sleeping. Although at one point in my life I was actually using it to help me sleep so take that as you will. lol. Very small amount too. Like one small puff and just enough to of an effect to… Reduce stress… lol

I think that it may be the social element which helps you to sleep. I’ve been talking to someone IRL for the first time in a while and honestly I’m just sleeping so much better.

Probably one factor for sure but I also get a similar effect if I’m just gaming alone or watching something good and having some alcohol. Again just probably de-stressing in general. Not having anything to do the next day helps too cause I only drink on days/evenings when I don’t have to work the next day. So obviously there’s a lot to factor in to this beyond the booze. lol. “Shocking results says things that help you reduce stress improve sleep.”

Lofi, books, and taking a break early from screens. Get like an hour long detox.

i’ve just had to admit it’s not possible for me. i’ve struggled with sleep since a child, and it never got better. somewhere between the trauma/ptsd it got even harder. i used to be able to exhaust myself and get enough rest at times, but even that rarely works anymore, and can sometimes have adverse affects. ambien’s don’t work, trazadone’s just make me feel like shit and rarely worked.

with that being said, what has worked for me very well is biking to the woods at night with some beers, weed, my guitar, a candle, a radio, and hanging out at this one stone gazeebo. party, jam out, cry, shout, scream, howl, or just sit and chill and listen to the night. watch the moon and what few stars i can see pass me by. early summer time there’s lightning bugs out, and they’re so beautiful. hang out with the trash pandas rummaging through the rubbage bins. watch the deer play with their fawns. take a ride back to where i’m sleeping and i can catch some shut eye. if i could afford this almost every night, i would say my sleeping troubles were over. it’s just the little bit of relief i can manifest for myself

I also struggled with sleep disorders most of my life until I found medication (an antipsychotic) that knocks me out at a regular time every night. Hypnotics didn’t help me either. I sympathize with your struggle, improving my sleep schedule was one of the most helpful things I have done for my mental health.

happy to hear you got something figured out that works for you. one of the dude’s i hang out with sometimes got seroquel, and it works for them. these are still temporary bandages, much like what xanax was meant to be. even these newer drugs aren’t meant to be taken for a life time. that dude i mentioned is worried for the time when he’s supposed to be taken off. i feel for all us struggling through this fucked up life with the capitalists exploiting even our health crisis.

with public health, no savings, and no employment, i’m sol. all i get is what’s given to me by god’s grace or the grace of the people that choose to share with me.

getting a prescription for a 1/2-1 ounce of weed every month would help me a lot

I recently tried taking melatonin tablets, they seem help somewhat from what I can tell. I think what helps me sleep the most is simply nice cool temperatures, I always go out like a rock on days where it is roughly around 10°C outside.

I used to fall asleep during the day all the time. Turns out my deep sleep was disturbed by hanging around a monitor all the time.

Now I shut off all monitors 90 minutes before sleep and my troubles are gone.

I used to need a small amount of light on in the room and now I have towels under doors and ever light must be off. I sleep in absolute dark if I can. I don’t even have a clock next to my bed. I have alarms on my phone and unless they go off I stay in bed. lol

Take my night meds three to four hours before bedtime, take an hour long walk, use app-blocking software for my phone and get in bed around forty minutes before my sleep time. Next day wake up at my usual time no matter how long I slept.

  • i love using melatonin when i really need to get to sleep ASAP. it’s better than straight-up sleeping pills i’ve used in the past, which make you feel tired afterwards no matter how long you sleep

Just took sleeping pills last night and can confirm I feel a bit meh today. Though I did also get the booster shot yesterday.

      • i’m sure the booster affected it too, but yeah, i always got that kind of inside-out dead feeling after using typical sleeping pills. so long as you’re doing something conducive to sleep for 30 minutes after you take the melatonin like reading a kindle, then i’m almost always knocked out and get a good night’s sleep.

For me it’s always stress but I have a long history of sleep related anxiety. Like fighting addiction to prescription sleep meds levels. I very rarely have a truly great night of sleep. Most of the times it’s just “good enough.” Sometimes I sleep well without taking anything. Sometimes I barely get by. I use, cut in half, 1mg melatonin to help me get to sleep sometimes if I’m not tired enough (you only naturally produce not even half a milligram so even 1mg is a lot to your body and taking too much can have an opposite effect). Other times I take it when I inevitably wake up in the middle of the night. Usually after about 3-4 hours like clockwork. Then my body doesn’t always want to go back to sleep. I have other prescription meds that I use occasionally as well. It’s not addictive like the stuff I used to use and I only use it ever now and again. Its all 100% stress induced though. All of it. The more pressure I feel to make sure I sleep well the next day the harder it is. I know everyone experiences this to some degree but my brain takes it to a new level. Years ago it would get so bad I’d have to go sleep in another room or on the floor because I just had to “go somewhere else.” Then I changed jobs and was much happier for a while and it all went away for some years until just recently works going down the shitter and society is literally falling apart around me.

None of the following suggestions are especially obscure but I have seen these help people: Sleep hygiene is important. Go to bed around the same time every night, wake up around the same time every morning. Don’t eat too close to bed time. mileage will vary but white noise is popular for people as well. Try not to just sit there for hours becoming progressively more anxious about not sleeping. Get up and do a quiet activity for 15 or 20 minutes then try to fall back asleep again. Exercise daily at least a few hours before bedtime

Following a consistent schedule is big, do as much as you can the same every day. Then when lack of sleep or shit sleep messes things up continue on per usual much as possible, don’t take a nap.

For me I have to cut off food around 3PM or so, if I eat any later than that I’ve noticed its much harder for me to sleep. Also cut back or eliminate caffeine if you haven’t.

Get a lot of light during the day (if it’s winter and it’s dark during the day, there are those lamps that you can have at your desk) and minimize light when you’re going to bed. Set phone/computer on night shift/night light to minimize blue light and also get a COMFY sleeping mask (I use the manta sleep mask, which is relatively expensive but it’s SO much better than those crappy ones because it gives your eyes room to breathe). Meditation before going to bed can help a lot too.
