Going back in time you have to look at things more regionally as the world was not as connected up as it is today but regional hegemonic powers were clear as day too whether it was the Caliphate, Rome, Egypt, Persians, various Chinese dynasties, Mongolians, etc etc.

You need to get some perspective. The US is not the only power in this world and China’s scientific research is faster and more efficient than the US. China accounted for 24.3% of the entire world’s published research between 2018 and 2021 and it is pretty clear that they are collaborating with their strategic partners.
