Yeah one of my biggest problems with windows is it’s just boring. No new iterations to really look forward to, no major graphical innovation, no new mechanics and features to mess with. Instead of all that it gives a new file explorer theme, improved a couple existing features and added things like renaming virtual desktops. One of the main reasons I left was it just got boring and I wanted something new. I’m sure theres others in the same boat, who don’t care about auto updates or other things like that but instead just dislike how stale and un-innovative windows is.
Yeah, honestly my favorite things about operating systems is seeing how different the experience can be just to do basic things or a completely different style. now that windows is going to be the same forever (except maybe windows 10x) it just doesn’t have much for me. I like your idea of an LTS windows version.
I think their main problem is their focus on backwards compatability. A lot of companies rely on old and outdated systems and windows has supported that it’s whole life, (ie: try making a folder called con). Apple on the other hand is well known for throwing out old technology and just expecting everybody to keep up which allows them to make radical change like switching architectures like they just did.
I would love to see a new os come out of MS as an experiment but they aren’t the kind of company to do that. Google on the other hand does have a completely new OS called fuchsia if you’re in to the idea of a fundamentally different type of operating system.
Well Microsoft has Sigularity and a couple of others.
To this topic, I have to disagree. I mostly use Linux for work and personal use, but have a Windows 10 box for gaming. There is a lot of stuff wrong with Windows 10, from auto-updates to spontaneous reboots while working and wakups from sleep in the middle of the night, strange split between Apps and normal application, a store, and so on. I would have like it MS didn’t try to be so inventive and added these strange features and just continued to evolve Windows 7 with security, performance and hardware support improvements. I don’t want to learn a new UI every few years, that breaks the learned workflow. An OS should work as expected and just stay out of the way most of the time. Very few people care about the OS more than their Applications.
