Why doesn’t the main domain switch from dev.lemmy.ml to lemmy.ml or www.lemmy.ml ? I understand, that it’s supposed to indicate being a dev environment. But you should keep in mind, to change the domain before the community gains popularity and more people join. In this case, it will stick to the domain dev.lemmy.ml.

This is right. I have no idea why certain domains are considered “legitimate”, while others aren’t. Esp now since domain names aren’t even where things are hosted anyway.

There is zero reason to pay for a domain.

I mean looks are a reason to pay for a domain - isn’t that the whole point? Secondary reason is of course that top level domains act as sort of categories. i.e. if you end up on .es domain that’s a website that is targeted to spanish region.

When I first saw .ml I thought it has something to do with Machine Learning :person shrugging:

I kinda agree with you but it’s a scarce resource so it has to be managed somehow. It’s already abused by “domain parkers” etc. imagine if every domain would be free - the only option you’d have would be lemmy-873hbbxams.com.

It’s probably one of few cases where blockchain solution would be an ideal fit.
