I dont care about TikTok, I don’t care about rednote. I’m just happy people are trying new things. I feel some people here underestimate the percentage of the people online who will avoid trying new things.

Think of how many people just have facebook and/or google be “the internet”. They underestimate the things the average users will put up with to avoid having to switch services/operating systems and so on.

This is a good thing, even if they aren’t going to a service you prefer.

Are there any other popular short-form content alternatives right now? Insta sucks and Loops is very much not ready yet.

Tiktok has always been like this.

Their comment system is absolutely broken and actually it’s probably on purpose. 90% of these comments get restored on appeal but they are already burried deep so it’s very popular moderation strategy where the system relies on correction to appear safe an intelligent but the correction ends up being irrevant in the grand scale of things.

Same thing with Twitter community notes which add context when everyone already read the tweet to give an illusion of moderation and safety.

As an engineer I’m honestly very impressed by the effectivenes of this strategy — it’s brilliant despite, you know, being evil — and it’ll take public a while to catch up.

Is… China in support of the Palestinian genocide? They’ve been very vocally critical of Israel throughout the past year…

This is like. AmericaTok. America is the nation that engages in by far the most Palestinian genocide denialism.

Not an adjustment, it’s literally always been that way.

    Loops.video, or at least Bluesky.

Bluesky will meet the same fate. It’s “federated” mostly in name only.

Loops is promising though, but it’s obviously not polished enough or ready for mass use yet

I mean, fuck Tik Tok, yes. But also try saying “Liberate Hong Kong”, “Taiwan Independence”, “Remember Tiananmen Square 1989”, or “Xi is Winnie The Pooh” on Rednote. Let’s not pretend that Rednote, or any other Chinese media, is free of censorship either.

The difference here is that TikTok did not enforce censorship on content related to the genocide in Palestine, nor did it have a right-wing bias in the algorithm like, say, Twitter does.

This shift in censorship puts TikTok in line with Twitter and Facebook/Instagram on the propaganda narrative that they want on their platform. Which is a massive issue for anybody left of white supremacists who cares about free speech and facts.

nor did it have a right-wing bias

looks at how they promote AfD influencers in Germany, and how they promoted targeted videos to try to elect a neo-nazi in Romania

        It doesn’t have what?

Well arguably it has whatever-destabilizes-the-country-the-most bias, but for most of the western world this mostly means they have a pro local fascists bias.

Yes, you’re right. “This population under a genocide should liberated” and “Chinese man is yellow bear lol” are equivalent forms of conversation. Absolutely heroic.

You’re right, that would be a concern if I felt important enough for China to give a fuck about me and what I have to say as a foreign national. Too bad that me only exists in your imagination and the real me understands that the world does not revolve around their travel and internet activity.

They meant physical consequences as in using China’s internet access unique id to identify the commenter and then having them “reeducated” by local government forces.

Instead of this comment, you could have recommended mastodon.

Why don’t you want mastodon to succeed? Is your pride and vanity worth more then the fediverse?

I do recommend and use Mastodon. I even have a link to my Mastodon profile in my Lemmy Bio. I recommend other parts of the Fediverse as well, Firefish, Sharkey, Misskey, Iceshrimp, Mbin, WriteFreely, PeerTube, Owncast, Pixelfed, Loops, Castopod and others are all great platforms.

The absolute irony of the person posting clown emojis being a clown themselves.

I think their eluding to the federated/decentralized equivalent. There’s little difference in switching sides to another state moderated app xD
