I understand, I can sympathize with that even just from all the Lemmy.ml shenanigans I get up to and the breaks I take accordingly, I can’t imagine how much more stress must be on their plate from upholding and maintaining the EM_POC comm. Good to see others step in, I know Khizuo and Angel do great work, I know it isn’t an easy task. I hope Sweet_Pecan is in a better headspace now that they’ve stepped away for a bit, and wish them well.

I’m still fuming over how I made the point that the Chinese Red Army didn’t do the long march just so western “leftists” in the 2020s would find excuses to endanger their immunocompromised comrades, then some exceptionally bad lemmygrad user started saying that I was being irrational and that, if anything, masking in 2024 was like attempting to do the Chinese Long March on your own. Yeah, maybe it is a lonely road to do things correctly when crackers jump at any excuse to continue doing what they had already decided to do and call it praxis because they feel like it! Of course those of us who go through with the logically consistent actions are constantly pissed off.

I had the thought of something like this, but nominating the YouTuber Jessie Gender for worst video-essay of the year with her 4 hour long video about Palestine which boils down to “what’s happening in Palestine is really bad, but liberal Zionism is valid”. She also managed to include a quote from “Son of Hamas” in the original video. Maybe the biggest display of BreadTuber sophistry I have ever seen, not to mention it is the length of two entire movies, while saying almost nothing worth hearing. It has just stuck with me how phenomenally bad this video was.

I was following her channel when it was absolutely tiny and was stoked to see it goes, I like star trek and she had done good shit before in the general video essay genre. There was an earlier essay she did that she sourced a reactionary freak and she and her co-writer for the video got really defensive when I pointed out she was basing her point off of information provided by an extreme reactionary, the replies were that they thought really hard about including the dude but decided to cause it supported their point, I replied that a reactionary source that supports your point of view either means you could find another less shitty person to cite or examine your point cause if only a reactionary’s works support your point, it’s probably a reactionary point. I forget the specifics and the video cause it was over a year prior to this one, but it was a huge red flag. She wouldn’t re-examine her point when and argued to hell and back and made excuses why it was OK to promote reactionaries abd then makes a 4 hour video about how we should be nicer to zionists. The radlib mind in action. If you’re on nebula and not patrick h willems, I’ve got no damn time for you.

It was just really tone deaf and disrespectful ultimately, there was something in it about how IDF members are drafted so it’s not really their fault for having served, clearly ignoring that you can just choose not to be an IDF member and do the relatively short prison sentence, in regards to her saying people shouldn’t be boycotting some IDF soldier. I don’t have the heart to watch whatever changes were made, I doubt they were transformative though given the original.

Worked with a dude who was born in Israel, he’s cool as hell and left as Doom as he could. He ended out getting a park ranger gig for his military service and decided to do it instead of go to jail cause at the time he figured he wasn’t going to be doing any personal harm and jail seemed scary. He regrets it now for not doing the time out of principle. So yeah, ex IDF guy has told said he was a coward for signing up but those who willingly join are the greatest cowards

I think you would get a lot out of Liu Shaoqi’s How to be a Good Communist. It’s easy to take Mao’s meaning to dogmatism and endlessly debatebro, but that’s not what he means exactly. Shaoqi frames it in a way that means you shouldn’t struggle for the struggle, especially if it is meaningless, but to be firm yet gentle for those who mean well and are willing to listen. Struggle sessions can be very useful if they are a matter of principles, and thus cannot be avoided, but aren’t always productive if they aren’t about principles.

I’m sort of posting a bit but that whole debacle with the tanks/gossip being created kind of put a damper in my motivation. I don’t know if I’m imagining it because I haven’t seen the data but it feels like there were more regulars I’d see before that. It was also also shortly after the election, things in general have been a bit depressing for commies since then so maybe people are just not as enthusiastic as they were.

Partly true. I did send someone a single DM asking asking a person to mutually not talk to me after they asked me not to talk to them. That post-to-selfcrit practice has been abolished though, rightfully so.
There is a lie that has been spread that I was “dm harassing poc” which one implies multiple DMs which is untrue and 2 is incorrect because they weren’t poc. If you’ve seen that one around it’s a complete misrepresentation.
For what it’s worth, the person who said that you had been DM harassing them has deleted their account. There were various other meltdowns and account deletions while you were away. In retrospect, it was wise of you to step away from the site. The only other major site development was a bunch of Bluesky refugees found Hexbear because Bluesky onboarded some rabid transphobe.
I think the biggest lesson to learn is being wary of those that seek to go from 0-100 near instantaneously. Social whirlwinds can be whipped up and then everyone in the surrounding area is just pulled along with them at such a pace that the whirlwind instigators dictate everything that occurs.
I don’t want to say too much. It’s impossible be completely certain one way or another whether things were whipped up with intent to target and purge people or not. It could have been sincere but over the top social hysteria, or it could have been intentional wrecking with a US troop being directly involved.
I do have one significant observation, there is a sectarian struggle that occurs on this site between traditional MLs and an ultra-left deviation that believes the conditions of the US are the same as the conditions of Palestine. FRSO discusses and opposes this idea here in more detail but the tl;dr is that they oppose uniting the american working class because they’re settlers, and view the scenario as the same as Palestine. This is an incompatible view with the ML view on national autonomy.
It is this struggle between two sets of beliefs, the traditional MLs who believe in uniting the working class, and this ultra-left deviation who no longer believe in it, which caused much of the struggle back and forth about critical support for Luigi, and it has caused struggle over topics regarding empoc on the site. This has gone unrecognised by most MLs on the site because some in this ultra group have argued for their position under the banner of “make the site more comfortable for empoc” and because MLs (myself included) widely agree with the sentiment of that banner it has been missed that this means giving up an important principle of ML.
Anyway it didn’t help that some of the people that fell out with me then immediately started falling out with poc people in the news mega for exactly the same reasons they fell out with me. It was this that really helped some people realise it was actually a sectarian struggle occurring. Probably also helps that I am an ethnic minority here in britain and have mentioned this once before on the site.
My read of the whole situation as someone with no access to any third-party or outside channels of communication is that the admins and mods were falling into the traps of commandism and lack any plan or procedure to politically develop the userbase. They were beginning to rely on purges in order to handle political contradictions except Hexbear doesn’t have a good onboarding process either, both in terms of quantity (onboarding 20 users to replace 10 purged users) and quality (onboarding 2 users who are members of irl orgs to replace 5 terminally online users). This is a recipe for self-destruction. Part of commandism is also the commandist cadre being burned out and cynical towards the masses that they nominally are supposed to politically develop, and I felt the same cynicism happening among some mods. Mods who believe there is no hope in Hexbear politically speaking shouldn’t be trusted to be mods because how can we be sure that their actions aren’t motivated by self-sabotage. People who feel contempt for the average user should arguably not even be here (it’s not healthy to be within a community where you hate an average member of the community) and they definitely shouldn’t have mod privileges.
Commandism isn’t a problem until it comes to unrecognised sectarian disputes. Then it’s a problem because one group seeks to purge everyone that’s from another.
My biggest concern with organisational structure is actually being horizontal and I’ve raised it. Previously the site was structured into two tiers, mods and admins. Mods would request things of admins and then admins would go through a fairly lengthy process of being fully informed of a topic before coming back on decisions. The admin team could talk about sensitive topics openly among themselves without concern about leaking or miswording things in a way that might mistakenly offend. And another benefit of this inner circle is that because they’re fully informed on everything that happens they have full historical context of a situation going back years on the site. Mods on the other hand do not. Now the organisational structure is basically horizontal, and much stuff comes to a vote. The problem with this horizontal structure and voting is that many of the participants won’t be fully informed of a topic, and won’t have the historical context of a user going back years who is off their radar. So when stuff happens and happens FAST this structure is problematic. People are susceptible to just going along with something that sounds reasonable on the surface. It’s also dangerous because of activity levels. Let’s say you have 60-70 mods but only 10-15 of them are actually talking and participating in the decision process, well if you inject 3 people into that process who are collaboratively working together they can guide the wider group where they want them to end up. It’s dangerous. This is dangerous in orgs too but it’s particularly dangerous online, I know because I’ve personally done that shit to multiple subreddits and it works.

I feel this for like… The entire working class? I know some of the working class are fucking assholes right now but I am deeply sympathetic to them, to all of them. We are all victims of the system and yeah sure this does not excuse the harm they cause to other members of the working class but solving that requires engaging with them. Every communist needs to be driven by a distinct optimism in people, including the odious ones. To love and believe in people.

Well there’s more to it, that’s just 1 piece of a larger puzzle. But the long and short of it is that the instigator of the whole debacle was in the US army, which changed much of the context of what went down. A lot of positive changes happened because of it, and I suspect more changes to come but I won’t say what I know, I’d just be getting ahead of official posts.
I know what user you’re talking about, they also commented in this thread about “stomping on necks” and made a comment elsewhere about “incinerating those that won’t learn.” Additionally that same user specifically brought up your name multiple times even after you left.
