After the death of ViMusic (a very lightweight MD3 YouTube Music client) I saw RiMusic getting quite popular but now it’s a very feature-rich client with its own UI design that is also very slow on older devices (based on my bare metal tests). I found this other one interesting so hopefully someone else will like it too.

Remember when FOSS apps stereotypically looked worse?

The FOSS Android apps seem to have top-notch uis, and often look / work better.

Not all FOSS apps look good now but MD3 really made it easy to make good looking apps. Still it’s a shame the libraries that are used to provide it are slower than the previous ones.

I’ve got ViMusic version 5.4 installed. Can you explain what you mean by “dead”? Do I need to switch too?

ViMusic is no longer maintained so any Google side changes (that are very frequent recently) can break some features of it (like it already did with song authors) or the whole app. If it works for you then you don’t have to switch. I’m not familiar with any security vulnerabilities of ViMusic so it’s definitely not necessary to avoid using it (though I still highly encourage you to check its GitHub so you’re informed about any issues found) and it’s probably even slightly more privacy-focused than InnerTune but many users prefer actively maintained software for many reasons, including but not limited to the ones mentioned above.

I love this app. I’ve been using it for at least a year now. It’s my number one app on my phone for music without ads, a Spotify replacement of sorts.

However, it does have moments where it cycles endlessly on a search result, possibly due to an issue with YouTube’s API. Sometimes, if I’m away from my phone, I find it stuck in a searching pattern. All-round, it’s an awesome replacement for Spotify.

FYI: This is a fork of the original InnerTune-project (which I had used up till now) that is no longer updated. Thankfully, exporting and importing works well for those that are on the old one and want to switch.

I really like this app. Though it does seem to have google tracking according to duckduckgo. Maybe inevitable because it’s getting the music data from YouTube? But that would mean that it wouldn’t work while blocking the trackers, but it does work. I don’t know, just felt it was worth pointing out.

Besides that, pretty nice app. Works well, has a nice UI.

I think this app is just a very simple frontend to the official API without much tracker blocking. It’s not meant for privacy but more for simple ad-free listening.
