Hello friends,
I am looking for a self-hosted task / to-do list app that supports:
- syncing across devices, preferably self-hosted
- sort items myself rather than by deadline or built-in priority features, and preserve that order when syncing
- allow defining arbitrary custom attributes
Some really nice to haves but not absolutely necessary features:
- treat custom attributes as first-class. i.e. allow showing those attributes on the task-list view, without having to view all details to see it. Or be able to filter or by the attribute or sort by it.
- allow custom logic for sorting
- just scriptable features in general would be nice
I have been thinking of making my own, but wanted to see if this exists first.
If you already have Nextcloud, maybe Nextcloud Tasks? It has worked really well for me although it is kind of a pain to get setup on phones.
Unfortunately I don’t think is supports custom attributes or any scriptable features that I know of. But the web UI does let you sort manually. But I don’t see that option on the phone app. Maybe I am just missing it. So it will get you half way there.

Org mode with webdav backend and https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.orgzly/ ?
Vikunja seems to support all of this in its list view. You can add and sort by labels, those labels are displayed in the list view, and you can drag and drop items and their order is maintained. It is a selfhosted web interface so all devices will have the latest data.
It has an API that’s capable of anything the normal interface can do (as it plugs into the same API,) so if you’re interested in scripting that would be a big bonus. I wrote a script that glues it ntfy for notifications on overdue tasks or reminders.
I used for a while MyTinyTodo and personally I really liked the simplicity and minimalism, while having a good range of features (also super small footprint on the server) Sadly I realized too lists were not really working for me anymore, so I had to move to a kanban board, but I have fond memories of that software :)
It’s not a perfect fit, but have you tried todo.txt? https://github.com/todotxt/todo.txt
this is great, but would only good for command-line or keyboard-driven use. Would need a compatible mobile / touchscreen UI
There’s an okay android app: https://github.com/todotxt/todo.txt-android
And I use this on my PC: https://sourceforge.net/projects/sleek/
Answering myself: looks like taskwarrior is the closest thing right now. It seems moderately customizable with custom sort and atributes, and those attributes are decently first-class.
There are android clients, some are unmaintained, but theres a solid one called “foreground”. I have not tried any android clients yet, so will look into that.
Happy you found something that works for you. I used TiddlerWiki for some time. It‘s very customizable and extensible. However, I ended up integrating my Tasks into Joplin in the end. I guess the main reason was that Joplin could be used offline too. (TiddlerWiki has the option to display content offline after you once load it, when used as PWA but it wasn‘t working reliably.)
