Curious about people’s experiences with the PinePhone (not pro). Is anyone daily driving it? For those who have it and are not, what are the showstoppers?
This was multiple years ago so things might have changed but it is quite slow compared to a lot of modern phones and I realized there’s a few android apps I need for daily usage. Anbox and other programs either weren’t available or were usable enough
@CorrodedCranium I think speed is something I’m less concerned about overall. My daily driver since 2016 has been a galaxy s5, I think the pinephone is a slight improvement. Modern flagships will run circles around both of them. How were the basic phone features in your experience?
Texting and phone calls worked fine but even using a web browser took just enough time to be frustrating and at the time there weren’t a lot of great media players. I don’t think I was able to get background playback working for music
I was unable to use it as a daily driver. GPS and other radios would often die and require a restart, very slow UI regardless of distro, and poor battery life
@lps2 just out of curiosity, is this recent experience?
It’s probably been 6-9 months
I tried to use it as a daily driver at the beginning of this year. The biggest showstopper for me was the modem randomly stopping and sometimes requiring a device restart.
I used it for some time. Software wasn’t ready. Now software improved a lot (still far from Android of course), but the phone is slow for me, so I ordered PinePhone Pro and now I use it as a daily driver.
Battery life really sucks.
I used mine for a while a long time ago but battery life was really short and software, both drivers and userspace, were still too early to be used. I should give it another go at daily driving. I update my device periodically and there’s been some major strides forward.
