So what are you Pathfinder players/dms been up to? Running any adventure paths? Whats your character’s build/concept? 1st edition or 2nd edition? Just wanted to make a post for a general discussion.
I’m running through the beginner’s box in Foundry VTT. I picked it up on a Humble Bundle sale, and it’s my group’s first exposure to the system after 5e. I’m absolutely astonished with how easy the box is to run, how well polished the content is, and how awesome the system is to play and GM in.
Yeah I’ve also been running the beginner box and the level of automation and prep that the foundry stuff includes is mind boggling. I feel like I only need to do like an hour of prep per 3-hour session
Hey, I’m right there with you! Polished is a great way to describe it. How are you enjoying Foundry? I bought the physical box as well as the Foundry module. I’m hoping to run it live, but I’m curious about the VTT experience.
I absolutely love Foundry. I’ve been running a D&D game in it for a few years, and it blew Roll20 out of the water when we switched. Dynamic lighting, walls, and lots of little nice features make it great to use. The 5e system is good in FVTT, but it pales in comparison to Pathfinder 2e. I think a lot of that is due to the licensing differences, but I can’t say for sure. As an example, if a spell has an effect (bonus, penalty), a card appears in the chat and you can drag the effect onto your character token. The bonus will become active, and it’ll affect rolls, etc. Same thing for stuff like blinded. Basically, all the annoying-to-track things just work automatically out of the box. Every rule and creature is in there, and it’s all coded smartly.
At this point, having played 5e live (no VTT) as well as in Roll20 and in Foundry, and PF2e in Foundry, I think I definitely prefer Foundry, and would use it even for future in-person games. It’s just massively easier to prep and track stuff as a GM, and nicer for ability management as a player.
Hey. My group and I just started out with the Beginner Box and currently I am prepping the Kingmaker P2 Adventure Path. I yet have to play it as a Player though.
I love that its great at having explicit rules and codifying things that I had to come up with rulings on the fly in other Systems.
Currently running the 1e Kingmaker path, and ive only seen good things about the 2e remake. Its been the most fun me and my friends have had playing a ttrpg. Wish you guys luck!
Also more evidence on how good the Beginner Box is at bringing in new players.
Oh yeah, the Beginner Box is superb. 5e was lousy in that regard.
I played the cRPG version of Kingmaker and loved it. Then I presented my players some pitches (including one for Kingmaker P2) and everyone was on board with it. I am very eager to found out how the Kingdom Management feels at the table.
Wish you and your group also best of luck with continuing Kingmaker!
I’ve read through the Beginner Box, but I haven’t run it yet. I know there’s no required order, but most things I’ve read point toward Trouble in Otari after the Beginner Box. Any reason you went to Kingmaker?
Yeah its recommended as an extension to run Troubles in Otari, same location but more Stuff to do for the Players; a small Sandbox so to speak.
I had previously played Kingmaker on PC and I loved it, and I loved the idea that you can have that Kingdom Building at the Table, I was intruged and psyched. So I pitched several Ideas about what to play after Menance under Otari, Including but not limited: something homebrewed after the Beginner Box (where did the Goblins got the Egg from?), Abomination Vault, Kingmaker, Mummys Mask (I listened to the Pathfinder Legends Audiodramas regarding that AP) and also Trouble in Otari. Mummys Mask and Kingmaker tied so I picked Kingmaker as I hoped to run it anyway :)
I’ve also started playing Kingmaker on PC, and that may be the first path I do as well. We’ll see how the Beginner box goes.
And thanks for mentioning the audio dramas. I had no idea those existed, but they look excellent! I think I’ll try them out.
I think its a pity that there are only two APs made by Pathfinder Legends. I really love the Voice Cast :)
Running a new group through 2e Abomination Vaults. I’m also excited to run Indigo Isles at some point, although don’t have the time to do that right now. The AP looks really good though!
Happy to see pathfinder get more love the last few months
Seems like a lot of people switched over to Pathfinder recently due to all the bad shit WOTC has been pulling. Im all for it, Pathfinder and Paizo is FAR better than WoTC and 5e DnD (and whatever OneDnD is/was supposed to be). I really wanna run Abomination Vaults as well, just to try out 2e. I prefer 1e, but I 2e is a very well designed system.
I think a lot of us have ended up over on pathfinder.social but the beauty of the Fediverse is that you can join us there (and we can join you here)! Not sure if I linked the Lemmy instance correctly, let me know and I can try to fix it. I’m still new to all of this!
I’m currently running an Eberron conversion in Pathfinder 2e, homebrew campaign, but I’m currently being seduced by D&D 3.5/Pathfinder 1e. It’s partially probably nostalgia from being the first D&D books I ever bought, but I never actually learned how to play or run it. It’s massively deep and overwhelming for me to start learning but i love the art and style as well as the massive amount of content.
Its a lot easier than you think. The easiest way to learn (at least in my opinion) is to just read. You dont have to read every word of the Core Rulebook, but at least look through it all, and definitely read the middle section about combat (aka how the game actually works). You’re already playing 2e, so learning 1e shouldnt be that hard. If you need any of the books as pdf just ask, but all the rules and options are available for free on Archive of Nethys (which also has a 2e section). And the Paizo forums are great for asking questions or looking for answers.
Also Eberron is awesome. My favorite setting by far. Shame Keith Baker probably wont be able to continue writing stuff for Eberron due to WoTC.
I have to say I think I’m leaning more towards 3.5 for the flavor and a slight bit more grittiness and somewhat lower HP. But it doesn’t preclude me from moving on towards PF1e if I see rules gaps, or mixing and matching.
I wouldn’t be altogether too surprised of Baker launches a new setting under the ORC license, since he’s discussed working on a new one.
As a long time player of 3.5e and Pathfinder, I would go with Pathfinder. Although I love the aesthetics of 3.5e and that whole era, the balance changes that Pathfinder brought makes it more fun for everyone.
Yeah he was talking about a wild west themed “wandslinging” new area for Eberron, and now he’s thinking about just making it its own thing. If anyone can make that idea work, its Keith Baker.
Can I just merge the better rules and balance changes (grappling) into 3.5?
It does seem like the explanation of rules in 3.5 may be messier than how they’re explained in PF.
Although Pathfinder and 3.5e are very similar since Pathfinder was made to be a better 3.5e, they are still two different systems. You usually can’t just take stuff from 3.5e and put it into Pathfinder, you need to convert it and change it. A lot of rules and subsystems have been changed, too much for me to go into in a comment. I would do some more research on it, but I would still suggest just sticking with Pathfinder.

Glad to hear you’re having fun!
when the OGL kerfuffle started we used it as the reason to switch to the pf2e system. I decided to run the troubles under Otari newbie adventure and were a number of sessions into it. So far, 30+ year RPG veterans in our group are just loving it. I don’t think we’ll go back to anything WoTC or Hasbro releases for some time.
Pathfinder 1e is my true love, even though I’m a big fan of 2e. One of our very good friends has borderline personality disorder and because of that we have to run 5e now because it is the only system we’ve found that they can handle without getting too agitated. But because of my love for Pathfinder our next campaign will be the Extinction Curse converted over.
Hi, I’m currently playing a 1e table for the first time on Carrion Crown.
I’ve been running Gatewalkers on Fridays for a few months now, and Abomination Vaults on Sundays for about a year now. Total of about 2 years DMing pf2. The game’s been a joy to DM for, and the APs are well written enough that I don’t need to spend too much time on prep work.
Hey there! I’m happy to see this right at the top of the RPG community. It’s good to know there are others here.
I’m a long-time D&D player/DM mentally making the transition to Pathfinder. I’ve bought and read through the Beginner box, and I’m seriously impressed by how smooth it looks. As soon as the timing is right, I’m going to run it for some friends. I also bought the module on Foundry, but I’m hoping to run it live.
I’m running an in-person Quest for the Frozen Flame campaign with Foundry for maps/bestiary. They’re about to come to Rimecrag Pass tomorrow. I did have an oracle ready for Strength of Thousands but that fell through in the planning stage.
I’m playing a Kobold Summoner in Abomination Vaults. We’re currently level 4, and having a cracking time.
Yep, Over the course of the last 2 years both my regular fantasy games moved to PF2e. We’re all much happier with it than 5e and expect to be using it for a while.
In Extinction Curse I’m playing a Goblin Investigator. The other game just finished the Beginner Box and I’m GMing that one. Finally seeing the strengths of the system making it easier for the game master. 🙂
Technically I guess I play pathfinder 2e. Really these days I don’t seem to want to play much except blades in the dark but I will probably roll into an actual pf2 game at some point, once my 5e game comes to an end and my players tire of duskwall
