I dated a med student for a while who would practice bodily exams on me, and once pointed out that my liver was about 25% bigger than expected.

“Sweet, that means I can drink more before getting damage, right?”
“No Owl, you’ve already damaged it quite a lot. You need to stop drinking.”

She was right, I was a functional alcoholic at the time. It was a pretty big wake up call.

At that time I’d have at least 2 beers a night (500 or 586ml, usually around 4.5-5.5% ABV), with two or three nights of heavy drinking each week (4 or 5 pints plus some cocktails and shots). At my very worst it was 3+ pints most nights and two or three nights with 10-12 pints of 5-7%.

It doesn’t sound like loads (at least if you’re British) but it was enough that I would toss and turn and stare at the ceiling all night if I tried to sleep completely sober. I was tightly wound and pent up all day, and could only relax once I got home and started drinking. Almost all of my social interactions were while drunk or drinking. It turned out to not just be a wake up call about my own consumption, but about how much my society revolves around alcohol - I was a heavier drinker than many because I had a greater capacity for it, but the general behaviour was (is) considered completely normal. Everyone has a glass of wine or two in the evening. Everyone needs a night to break loose a bit. But it’s literally killing us.

Hey thanks foe the response. I drink like 1-2 a night, but usually don’t do the larger nights out myself, maybe once every two weeks where I’ll drink like 5 drinks in a night. Either way I should watch it, alcohol is quite bad for us

An easy thing to do is swap your poison of choice for a non-alcoholic version during the week. There’s a lot of really good ones now, so the only one that notices is your liver.

My parents and sister generally do dry January and/or sober October as a detox month, which also helps, but isn’t for everyone.

I would sooner support legalised heroin, crack or methamphetamine (let alone MDMA and cannabis). compared to alcohol.

Millions of people aren’t dying from fucking CBD oil.

This shit almost killed me back in the day. It isn’t even remotely fun. Like, they found it at the point where I was on the verge of cirrhosis.

literally same; they caught it in my early 20’s. never really had a “come to Jesus” moment about drinking/drug usage, but when i got on decent meds, i didn’t need to self-medicate as much.

Yeah, not gonna pay any more money for doctors visits after that last bill, but I got a fatty liver. Not sure entirely the reason, but the popular guess is when my gallbladder was filled with stones and infection, my liver had to pick up the burden. It left me turning yellow, but since I tan rather olive, I really didn’t take notice until a stabbing pain was running through me.

I’ve heard the liver grows back if you cut 90% of it off. So basically just dumpster dive a scalpel from your local hospital, do a bit of snip snip and it’ll regrow brand new.

    docters hate this trick

i’m in a similar boat, got diagnosed with fatty liver a few months back after being a functional alcoholic for years. my blood pressure was also through the roof at the time which prompted the doc to run a bunch of blood tests, both of the liver enzyme tests were “markedly elevated” but thankfully all of the tests for actual liver functioning were well within normal range. i abstained completely for 6 weeks and they both went way down again to near normal and my BP went back to normal as well AND i lost 8 pounds. then she told me i just need to lose weight and eat healthier, in addition to watching my booze intake. i also got hella bills for all the blood tests/ultrasound they ran that makes me not want to go back for a bunch of follow-up appts to check my progress like she was pushing for lol

i’ve started exercising regularly since the new year but i haven’t been great about the alcohol, i fell off the wagon again shortly after that last appointment. i wanted to go totally sober again for the new year but i went through a 12-pack of seltzers this weekend after a very stressful week. on the positive side, i’ve really pinpointed what my triggers/reasons for drinking are (mostly anxiety spiraling due to… gestures around vaguely everything about the world and the fact that i don’t feel like i have a future) and for the most part i didn’t like how the booze made me feel this weekend. its just not worth it when it fucks with my body so hard. anyway if i keep rambling i’d have to make this its own post but i needed to get this shit off my chest. main takeaway: thank god we don’t have cirrhosis dubois-finger-guns
