Originally it was a mod for DOOM III, recreated by fans of the Thief series, from where the idea was taken, but later they have created their own engine and now it is standalone. It has even graphically surpassed the original Thief game and with already more than 130 missions created by the community, constantly adding new ones, it is certainly a game for years and certainly one of the best and most complete OSS games that I know.
It is possible that the first version was made fast, but currently there is a considerable amount of work invested, as I believe, much more than in any other OpenSource game. You can create your own missions with the editor that is optionally downloadable, although creating a good mission is quite complex and requires a work of many weeks or months.
