With this whole debacle brewing, I was browsing /r/ModSupport (since all the good subs I know went private). There I saw a post from someone saying that Reddit admins are affecting discourse from the shadows and pushing their left-wing agenda with little accountability.
I agree with that except for the left-wing part. Turns out that Reddit thinks that mentioning the name of the new employee, who is a public figure, amounts to doxxing. I don’t condone doxxing but I don’t understand how admins are allowed to remain anonymous considering how much power they have.
Thoughts on this?
In general, I think it’s really complicated, because reddit is for the most part a news site, and most news publications are required to have at least some level of transparency about their editors. Reddit admins and mods of the top subs, ultimately remove and curate what content people end up seeing. If they’re not named, at the very least their processes should be transparent ( like having a public modlog ).
Scale is also an issue: small blogs don’t influence public opinion in the same way the 5th most popular site on the internet does.
But in this specific case, I think it’s pretty simple, she ran for office multiple times, and is a public figure, so it’s ridiculous to ban ppl for simply typing her name, or claim that her name is doxxing.
