Yes I think it’s indicating a federated source. When you say that it is not always the case I wonder if you refer to posts like this where the icon is shown despite the fact the community is based on lemmy.ml because in this examle you can hover over the image and notice that the image is actually hosted at “https://feddit.de/pictrs/image/...29879a4dbe.jpeg”
