Don’t even mention instances or federation, just say “hey you should join me on <favorite instance URL>”.

Once they are using it, that’s the first hurdle, and they’ll notice pretty quickly that there are other servers that all (mostly) talk to each other.

Why are there so many responses like this, saying not to go back to Google? The OP didn’t even mention Google as an option they were considering. I’ve seen zero discussion in any of the other posts around the fediverse where people have expressed any desire to use Google because of this. Why would anyone think that users who had already moved to Proton would find Google acceptable as an alternative right now?

For what it’s worth, lanolin is not vegan, despite the pictured ad claiming it’s ethically sourced and implying that animals are not harmed. Lanolin is produced from wool, and if you care about such things, often a result of unpleasant (to say the least) farming conditions for sheep. Probably there are some sources that aren’t so bad, but apparently there are reports that wool industry practices are pretty horrific to the sheep. (Read more here and here if you like.)

On the positive side though, there are plant-based lanolin alternatives, including vegan nipple creams. I couldn’t find any source that weren’t also ads for a product, so I’ll leave the search up to whoever is interested in them.

I’ve been thinking about this often lately as well. These fucking corporations with multiple billions at their disposal, and all they can produce is shit like Windows or macOS? AND it also costs money to use? AND it has ads in it?

Meanwhile a bunch of nerds working for free on a passion project are giving away software that is faster and easier to use and often more beautiful to look at.

I think I’d just bring extra food the next day so both I and they can eat. Clearly someone isn’t able to bring their own food for whatever reason, and I can’t really blame them for choosing to eat when the alternative is starving, even if it is annoying that I missed my lunch that day.
