Donald Trump often takes the breath away with his defiance of the basic norms of American public life. (See: January 6th.) But sometimes it’s the smaller encroachments on decency that serve as a reminder of how far outside the bounds he operates. “Can you control your client?” Judge Arthur Engoron demanded of Trump’s lawyer, during the former President’s testimony on Monday in Manhattan, where he stands accused of running a fraudulent business in the state of New York. “This is not a political rally. This is a courtroom.” Later, after yet another Trump soliloquy in response to a yes-or-no question, Engoron repeated his entreaty. “I beseech you,” the judge said, “to control him if you can.”
It’s still so wild to me that after all these years of seeing Trump lie, cheat, bully, grift, and bloviate that anyone looks at him and says, yes this is the man I want to lead our country.
Just listening to him rant for like five minutes should be enough for anyone to realize that he’s an incompetent asshole wholly unworthy of respect, much less public office. And yet, here we are with like 40% of the country saying he’s their guy.
Propaganda is stronger than people realize

MAGA aren’t really that loyal to Trump, well, not all of them. Remember when they booed him when he suggested they get vaccinated? The vast majority only support him because they see him as a strong man who hates the same people they hate and will hurt those people. Remember the MAGA woman in Florida complaining that Trump wasn’t hurting the right people? I think a huge percentage of MAGA feel the same way.
This is where propaganda comes into play. Propaganda has convinced conservative voters in general, and MAGA in particular, that the liberals and progressives who promote social programs and want to help them and make their lives easier, are really somehow hurting them. These conservatives believe that the injustices they suffer are somehow due to immigrants and liberals. Because of this, these voters keep electing the very politicians who are responsible for their suffering and demonizing the people who want to help them.
Trump is the final distillation of this process. Since Trump hates liberals, MAGA voters support him rabidly, even though he is clearly a criminal. In fact, his being a criminal is a good thing because it means he is more likely to hurt liberals. They see him as a rogue cop who is willing to break the rules to get the bad guys.
This was an insightful reply as it really helped me understand what I cannot fathom. Thank you for sharing.
Some people see incompetence as defiant strength.
But he’s lying about, cheating and bullying those people they hate.
They’ve been being fed the propaganda for decades that the foreigners are going to come and take their jobs and rape their women and steal their cars. They know that they’re behind on votes, so the only way to get the job done is what he’s doing. And the white Dems standing in their way, supporting all these foreigners he just pisses them off so much, which tickles them to no end.
Repubs are fucked in the head.
While I agree with the overall point, these courtroom examples are highlighting for me how thoroughly different the justice system experience is if you are the right sort of person moreso than fanning the flames of my Trump hatred.
A regular person pulling even ONE of his courtroom stunts would be admitted to a holding cell till the end of the trial
Is this the two-tiered justice system we keep hearing about?
Yes.
at the end of the trial day
Considering that guy received 100 years in jail I don’t think this is a good example of someone getting away with it.
No, they wouldn’t. People generally don’t go to jail for violating a gag order once, or even twice. They are generally fined a few thousand dollars, just like Trump.
Likewise, people generally aren’t sent to jail for giving long-winded or rambling testimony, especially if the lawyers on both sides don’t object.
And they didn’t object, in this case. Engoron was basically suggesting that lawyers should object more, but they had their reasons to let Trump keep talking. Prosecutors hoped he would perjure himself or otherwise look bad while rambling. The defense was afraid to make their client mad at them.
Cite your examples that aren’t rich connected people.
Nobody writes news articles about random people receiving gag orders
Yeah, but the courts in the states keep records.
Trump and the Republican party’s behavior is the best campaign advertising the democrats have.
I mean unironically yeah. They can basically ignore a significant part of the electorate with the threat of the Republicans coming into power if those voters don’t capitulate on their interests and vote Democrat. It’s a hostage situation.
You’re not describing anything new. This has been the only reason to actually vote democratic my entire life. I mean, it’s also the Republican messaging. Hats not exactly any way to elect the best government.
Yeah, giving him tons of free airtime is a great way to keep him out of office. It worked so well in 2016.
It’s the cheating I’m more worried about, they’re not afraid to coup, cheat or mob boss threaten.
The fact that this guy has a good chance of winning is why I’m leaving society to go live as a potato farmer in the woods.
I don’t mean to be a buzzkill, but you’ll probably have more success if you grow your potatoes in a field instead of the woods.
They sell these bags that you grow them in. They look like garbage bags that stand upright, and you unzip them to get to the potatoes
That’s actually kinda neat
