What’s their logic here? Maybe they value Hamas fighters dying more than their own civilians alive. Or they just don’t know how to resolve hostage situations?
Pretty much every video of IDF being engaged in combat indicates that they’re woefully unprofessional and generally have no idea what they’re doing. We’ve seen their soldiers run around pointing guns at each other and engaging in friendly fire, tanks huddling together with no infantry support, etc.
Infantry cannot support tanks because they use the Trophy system, if they would receive an attack their own tanks would kill their men because of how the system works.
In retrospect, that’s a massive downside of the system since tanks are largely blind. I have no idea what they expected to happen when they started using them in urban environments like this.
Well, the Trophy system has some thermal detector so it traces where the projectile is coming and it basically shoots something similar to shotgun shells if I’m not mistaken, so the driver doesn’t really have to see where it’s coming from. I assume it’s just a sunken cost fallacy where they have spent a lot of money into the system so they now have to use it even if it’s not reasonable to do so.
Yeah could be, from the videos I’ve seen it doesn’t seem to be working too well in practice. RPGs seem to hit the tanks just fine, and I even saw a vid where a guy runs right up to the tank to place the explosive right on the tank. Maybe they don’t activate every time?
They need some distance in order to activate, and also multiple shots can override the system. The one who placed the grenade wouldn’t activate because the heat isn’t present until there is an explosion, the heat the system detects is the one used from the propulsion of the rocket. Still, again it raises the question of how efective it is since most attacks in urban guerrilla will be carried out in short distances.
Right, and as @Addfwyn@lemmygrad.ml points out seems like it really wasn’t designed for the type of warfare they’re trying to do here. Seems like they’d be better off simply deactivating this and sending infantry along with the tanks. I’m guessing they figured that infantry would also be vulnerable and perhaps thought the tanks could survive RPG hits better than they actually did.
It has a lot of issues, it is basically effective against long-range explosive anti-tank weaponry. It is ineffective against anything close range, in large volumes, without a heat signature, etc. It also adds something like a million dollars to the cost of every tank you outfit with it.
If you were deploying tanks in a more traditional battlefield environment, it is honestly a pretty effective (albeit expensive) system. If you are deploying heavy tanks for urban warfare scenarios, you are an idiot to begin with, but it is also going to be a lot less useful.
Oh interesting, Trophy is homegrown rather than an American import. Presumably it can be turned off when combining infantry support, but have they even trained for that?
The system has been engineered with a narrow kill zone to ensure the safety of friendly personnel in close proximity to the protected vehicle.
Lol, lmao even. Dey just cowardly
They just love killing people.
And if they kill any of their own people, they can blame the deaths on Hamas and no one will be any wiser.
Maybe they value Hamas fighters dying more than their own civilians alive.
That is half of it, but there is also the PR angle. You rescue a hostage, people are happy and then move on. You kill one and blame it on your enemy, you get propaganda for far longer.
Look at what some of the hostages that have already been released said, that they were well-taken care of and their needs were seen to. The occupiers can’t have that become common, because it destroys their entire narrative that the Palestinians are inhuman savages that just want to kill Jewish people.
They don’t care about anyone’s lives.
It’s because they are fighting for a colony and its spoils. It’s not a surprise that all of them are selfish hatefilled monsters not fighting for their people/ fellow colonizers.
Contrast that with the resistance walking up to tanks to dismantle them and engaging in direct combat with a much better armed foe. It’s because they are selflessly fighting for their people.
