I’ve always had a thing for languages. I can also understand and read Spanish, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Italian.
Part of it is just me easily learning new languages. Part of it is travel.
But also, Dutch school system has a big focus on German and some focus on French as they are big trading partners and many business opportunities come frome these countries. So besides mandatory English for six years you also get mandatory French and German for two and an optional extra four years if you want to. I chose to learn German and drop French but ever since I moved to Belgium two years ago I picked up French again. I now am the go to guy for German speaking people at my place of work and half the country speaks French so I use it a lot as well.
