Right out of college I worked in public accounting (awful). It was mandatory to work 300 hours of overtime a year, virtually all of it in February - April. I would regularly work from 9am - midnight or 1 in the morning some weeks.
This is very encouraged in other white collar fields as well. I think most lawyers work like this. I regularly hear about doctors working 60+ hours a week.
Once again, this is projection by Americans. Not saying bad work cultures don’t exist outside the USA, but it’s really bad here.
I think the ‘threat’ of blue color jobs goes hand in hand with this. Sure, you’re not working a physically dangerous job and it’s not as grueling. I had that same attitude. I thought ‘hey at least I’m not working at a restaurant for $200 a week like before’.
