Journalist Richard Medhurst, known for his critical reporting on the Israeli genocide in Gaza, was detained by Austrian authorities this week following a raid on his home and studio.

Police seized all his electronic devices and accused him of being “a member of Hamas” and encouraging “terrorism”—charges that carry a potential sentence of up to over 10 years in prison.

Medhurst described the raid as a “trap”, stating that he was threatened with his residency being revoked after a brief interrogation. “They seized my phone and ransacked my place, turning my studio upside down,” he said, adding that authorities photographed his belongings and seized years’ worth of journalistic tools.

He linked his detention to pressure from the UK, emphasizing British involvement in the decision to have him arrested. “This is state violence and an attack on the entire profession, freedom of speech, and democracy,” Medhurst stressed.

most of the western democracies predate the cccp and have been doing this for far longer; perhaps we should call it what it is: the status quo.

There’s no freedom of speech, but only modern-day slavery.

Holy shit, I can’t believe I’m also a member of Hamas because I call Israel a genocidal state. Well, guess now I know. I’ll expect a raid any moment.

this is why the wealthy and well connected (eg luigi) have to lead the charge for emancipation drives of all kinds; each state apparatus will be employed to ruin their lives and there’s no way for the poor and disconnected to survive such pressure.

I think this is just irresponsible to say; the liberation of the working class is the job of the worker alone. I can’t go into detail on Lemmy for obvious reasons, but actually existing resistance networks of working class people do deal with and help each other with things like house raids. If you are at the point where you’re receiving this kind of state repression, you will also be well connected enough to get the support you need. I get my house raided occasionally, my comrades get raided semi-frequently, we all deal with it and live with it just like every other revolutionary throughout history who has stood up to an oppressive state and seen capital with its mask off.
