I think overall people from China and the west interacting more is a net benefit. Sure a lot of them will probably be shocked by the crap they see on western social media but also I don’t think they need to be babied, maybe limit how minors access the Internet but that’s about it.
Another big factor is that it’s becoming clear that the standard of living in China is growing while it’s declining in the US. Opening up allows China to increase its soft power by making it possible for people around the world to see what life in China is like for themselves.
Now that the Chinese tech and internet industry has largely surpassed the US, the GFW is not as necessary as it used to be.

Japan does very well with soft power from its cultural exports. I imagine China leveraging their own production along the same lines.
