For clarification: this isn’t new, from what I can tell in the article, they started the Robert E Lee holiday following the civil war, and MLK day came after.

Not that they shouldn’t be absolutely clowned on for this.

So what’s next? Is Trump going to celebrate Hitler on Veteran’s Day?

If your local college has a Kappa Alpha chapter, it is basically a cult dedicated to worshipping Robert E Lee. He appeals to that “war between brothers” tragic story type of “Lost Cause” narrative, and is ridiculously popular among dominionist Christians.

I can’t wait to watch the speech.

“And along with freedom fighter, Martin Luther King, we would also like to honor the great general Lee, who fought hard to keep half of our population in servitude and went on to surrender valiantly. While he didn’t win the war, he won our hearts.”

Recently drove through Mississsippi and Alabama ( off I-20). Seems like they have more important thinks to worry about.

Should have Year Zero’d them in 1865. Hang every plantation owner and Confederate officer, shut down every bank that funded slave purchases, break up the plantations and distribute the land to the freed slaves. May Andrew Johnson burn in hell.

Tbf there’s the South and there’s Alabama and Mississippi South.

And Louisiana, sometimes. And Georgia, obviously. Florida.

Texas… Okay, it’s the whole South.

But at least that cancer hasn’t spread to the Midwestern states!

Just wait until you hear what trump just tweeted about the jews…

I mean, he didn’t, but you were already prepared to say to yourself “Oh god, what NOW???”

Mostly because him, and controversial shit are just on brand for him. Like I could say he reverse pardoned the central park 5. That’s where you force a conviction even if the crime isn’t true.

And some people would believe me. And a reverse pardon isn’t even a thing. And even if it was, he doesn’t take oath until tomorrow.

Some people could still believe me. That’s just how shitty of a person he’s historically been, and how often he’s been shitty, that you could make up any obviously false claims, and it would still seem plausible.

I like to think I’m not any more gullible than anyone else, but every time I’ve heard something horrible from the orange convict, it’s beyond preposterous and somehow even worse than I was dreading. Yes, I’m prepared to hear and believe even worse. Yes, I can no longer enjoy political comedy because reality is more ridiculous

I thought so too, but then reading the article actually made it a bit less racist than initial thoughts. They had been celebrating Lee in January a good 70 years before MLKJ got his day in January. Still racist, but I can see politicians being like “fuck it. We’re not having two holidays a week apart from each other”.

Also, wouldn’t it be just as upsetting to racists in support of Lee as it is to non racists in support of MLKJ?

Funny, I’d have thought that celebrating a failed insurrectionist leader who fought for slavery is racist, regardless of how long they’d been doing it.

But if you’re going to get rid of the two holidays and only have one and celebrate it on MLK day, why not just call it MLK day instead of insisting on still celebrating Lee? Hell, it’s almost worse the more I think about it. If they had some random holiday that celebrated Lee and kept it around mostly just to get a day off you might have a point.

Oddly enough, years ago I had an eye doctor named Robert E. Lee, and he was a black guy. Seemed like a really nice fella.

It was Lee who opposed Confederate memorials. I’ll bet the orange traitor is toasting the fucking Confederacy right now.
