  • It is potentially a crime to call for people to kill other people. Yes you are probably fine. But the admin has to be the one to deal with it, and you’re far from the only jabroni acting way. On my server I remove that shit immediately and warn the person. Second time they’re banned.

What do you think entire previous chain of comments was about? You didn’t just say you approved. You didn’t just say you were happy. You said you want other people to go out and kill billionaires like he did. We literally just went over this. You said that true.

Think of the people who have to clean up your shit. Most of the admins who make all this possible are doing us a great service.

  • I think what a lot of people on Lemmy and the broader Fediverse don’t seem to appreciate is that instance Admins can be held liable for the contents of their instances. The obvious example is CP, but it extends well beyond that, so when we go on these boards and start saying things that will get the attention of government authorities, we are actually putting instance Admins in a very difficult and unenviable position because we want to chest pound and sound tough. If what you were doing could somehow drive change or whatever I would be more supportive of it potentially. But ultimately this is just tough guy shit on the Internet, and I don’t think it’s fair for the admins to have to face serious repercussions over it (almost all of which are spending their money to make this happen).

The only instances that are truly “free speech” platforms are either actually not truly free speech platforms where all is allowed OR they are just counting down the days until they have to stop or are otherwise shutdown.

  • Comments like yours are what lead people to behave that way man. I understand I’m coming off very harsh but I honestly think people need to take these things more seriously

I read a great comment the other day: “think about who your memes give ammo to.“ The same goes for conspiracy theories. You need to think about the audience that could be impacted by it, you are contributing to the cloud of misinformation.

  • Jfc I am so tired of conspiracies asserted so confidently anytime anything interesting happens. Can y’all just wait for like two goddamn seconds for information to come out instead of letting XXpatriotXx or whoever on YouTube and tiktok whip y’all up into a frenzy? Or are we all just going to start acting like tinfoil hat rightwingers desperately trying to make their lives sound more interesting?

  • Yeah it definitely has a “writing your congressional rep“ quality to it. Your one note or comment is rarely going to move the needle unless there is something truly illegal going on like workplace harassment that is undeniable, but when a lot of people keep bringing up the same issues/departments/people (maybe not explicitly) it can make a difference. Sometimes the squeaky wheel does get the oil lol

For those jumping in on this conversation, I am not saying it is always like this. I’m just saying it often is. Most companies operate at least somewhat practically when it comes to these things. They don’t want to hire new people, they don’t want inter-departmental strife. They don’t want projects not getting done because of toxic leadership. Beyond a certain threshold they often will act. Often it takes way too long and requires way too much from employees, but still, sometimes they act.

YMMV especially depending on the industry.

  • Yeah I’m with you on this one. All of these people saying “don’t say shit” think they are being smart (and I imagine most of them haven’t even been in the situation) but the reality is you are just making things worse for everyone else and getting fired after something like that is actually extremely uncommon because it’s very easy to point to and demand severance or just for making a lot of racket if that’s not an option.

It’s very easy to get laid off in the US. They don’t need to resort to such tactics. most of the time internal culture things are either ignored or decent people higher up make some small changes in their own departments/areas specifically. I find it’s a great way to subtly point to toxic leadership, especially if other people are doing it.
