lol me too. I grew up in the 90s/early 2000s so had no online gaming. I also had no friends to play with and only ever played against the computer. First time I got to play against someone was in college, and he got super mad at my button mashing. He was trying to do all those combos and stuff and I was just mashing butting and just destroying him. He was livid saying “wtf that’s not how you play what are you doing”

If it works, it’s not wrong. He was just jelly that he had no skillz.

My 8 year old nephew was kicking my ass yesterday at Ninja Turtles tournament fighter cause HIS random button smashing kept finding the special moves and MY random smashing barley found kick.

He was quite delighted in his triumph

Those really old games have somewhat inconsistent input readers. There’s a homebrew remix of that game called TMNT x Justice League turbo that plays much much better and is a huge amount of fun for the price of free on PC.

Is THAT why I could barely ever repeat the same move twice in a row? I actually made an effort to learn some back then on Mortal Kombat but it was still very hit or miss. So I gave up and went back to button-mashing.

This is why I like Soul Calibur.

It knows that’s what you’re going to do and makes every random combo of buttons do cool shit 😌

It’s the fighting game for people who suck at fighting games. It’s my favorite.

Same. The fact that it was “cheap” in this regard was heavily weaponized by my childhood best friend to mock me.

Memory unlocked: him beating me every round on Street Fighter EX plus Alpha (?) and then pointing out that every win by his was some kind of super special win, not even just a regular one.

He comparatively never wanted to play Soul Calibur

Street Fighter 6 is FANTASTIC at teaching people how fighting games work and Modern controls are a godsend. Highly recommend.

Edit: Wait is there any FTL fans here? I missed the FTL community in… the old website that we shall not mention. I kinda have an urge to go back and visit.
