What a tremendous loss to mankind was the dissolution of the USSR. Their legacy of supporting national liberation movements such as those in Palestine and Algeria will not be forgotten, and their sheer presense forced Capitalist nations to make large concessions in the form of Social Safety Nets the world over. Moreover, they proved that Socialism works, and inspired nations like Cuba, China, Vietnam, Laos, and more to follow in their footsteps. It wasn’t perfect, but it was real, and that came with real victories for the working class.
I suppose it’s time for the annual “alt-history fueled depression” where we all wonder what the world would look like had the Soviet Union never dissolved. I can only hope that the conditions within the Russian Federation move towards a Proletarian Revolution and a revival of their Soviet heritage.
