For a simple Twitter clone it has way to much hype. It tastes a lot like Google+ (RIP)

Well, let’s be real: it’s caught on way better than Google+ and is already pretty mainstream with lots of people flocking over in need for a Twitter replacement. Google+ entered into a space that was saturated by Facebook with very little extra value (or none at all) when switching.

Google+ also infected other Google products and basically forced itself onto folks who didn’t even want it, making it tainted from the start. It’s not like Threads is being forced onto WhatsApp users or anything. The only thing that’s possibly going to be an issue is once they start adding advertising, but I doubt that’ll matter much.

The most and perhaps only important thing is it is not helmed by Elon Musk. I’ll keep using it as long as that’s the case.

Yeah but if google+ happened now it’s so better.

Twitter is on its knees and the Google userbase is more cohesive than ever.

It says it’s all about free speech. Not a nesting ground for right wing extremists I hope?

I already have mastodon but always happy to explore new to me options.

Does it use ActivityPub? What makes it different than Mastodon?

EDIT: Not a fan of it requiring an app. It also doesn’t look like it’s open source. That’s a no-go from me.

They don’t need personal information. If the owner of a server doesn’t like what you post , they can ban the account. They run the whole machine so if they really wanted to they could block your IP from even connecting in the first place!

Decentralization doesn’t mean you’re free to post whatever you want. It’s still someone else’s computer, and they make the rules. Federation doesn’t change that. Sure it’s harder to suppress information, but a few admins could easily coordinate against you if they so wanted.

I created a chat space on WireMin and tried, but I can’t really ban a sender or remove any content.

“They run the whole machine so if they really wanted to they could block your IP from even connecting in the first place!” so I assume the owner of this platform is a guard, lmao.

I played with it a bit and, as you described, it does not require personal information to create an account. I saw people saying it is a combination of Mastodon & Session because they have a Discovery section to explore all servers and spaces.

I miss the awesome Windows 95 Plus! High color version. It was way prettier than the Windows 98 high color version that is on the pic.

This illustration is missing Twitter as well, it is not a phase, I’d say it is a ramification together with Threads.

Pretty impressive they got so many people to sign up with a logo that looks like a kid scrawled it when he was bored in class
