I had an opinion but I lost it; and my internet is down so I can’t write through a physical keyboard. I also struggle to write my opinion. :(

Anyway, I’m asking because skepticism is important!

My opinion is that its a divisive question that has often been exploited by agent provocateurs to undermine organisations.

In terms of practicality I don’t think anything good really comes from obsessing over it beyond acknowledging that age of consent is good in itself. Picking at the particulars of it does no one any good and isn’t really a special area of interest for socialists and communists anyway.

What is it with this recent (social media) trend of lowering the age of consent/majority?

I first thought this was some fringe, borderline paedophilic, opinion popping up from the rotten depths of the internet, but seeing several posts like this on multiple mainstream sites within short time, deeply concerns me. Why should undermining the progress which was done in the last century against child/youth labor, exploitation, marriage and full lawful punishment be a good thing?

As much as I hate the “think of the children”-argument, this one of the few cases where I support a strict abiding of the law. Everyone who actually took care of children or teenagers (and to a certain extend young adults) knows that they sometimes still need protection from their own decisions, mistakes or even malintented others. Not because of a lack of intellect, but simply due their lack of experience in life.

    • The more malleable a person, the more probable incels could get laid by manipulating that person. And, ofc, underage people (mostly adolescents) are more easily influenced by a “grown up”, because of their innate tendency to prove they’re mature.
