“Bro… broooooooo, you know that when you, you know, light a candle… you are also literally casting a shadow?!”

Consuming a tremendous amount of energy and water in running AI models to paraphrase a book when you can read the book in same amount of time or less is capitalist innovation

There are a lot of books that don’t have (and likely not going to have) audiobook versions. So there is some use for getting better text to speech with the extra stuff an AI could add. And of course have accessibility options that don’t have such robotic sounding with bad pronunciation.

That being said, shit is about profits first and the other stuff is not the focus. While I would love to listen to some books with the voice of the authors (or even could be neat to hear voices of podcasters I like read them). I would rather hear hear them read by people that either just really like it as a hobby or wanting to practice voice acting if the authors/podcasters aren’t in control of their voice an AI is using. Which reminds me that I should check LibriVox for some non-official audiobooks that I want to read but am too busy to do so.

If you can’t appreciate an hour-long bit wherein Eric Clapton repeatedly states a desire to shrink someone down and put them in his ass or become very large and have someone go into his ass and in either case control him with an array of wires and levers like some sort of giant robot then I don’t know what to tell you

For me, a lot of the entertainment value of Beavis and Butt-Head was how other characters reacted to them as they wandered around being dumbasses.

I don’t know if I’d enjoy Beavis and Butt-Head just sitting together and exchanging jabs nonstop.

It was 3 funny dudes kinda working on jokes and sometimes it didn’t work and sometimes they’d land a huge hit and it was the dumbest funniest thing. It was kinda like being a fly on the wall in a comedy writing room and you get to hear all the bits and not just the stuff that made it to broadcast. A “warts and all” experience.

Like the idea of a stereotypical east coast Italian dude who has depression but he can’t admit it because of machismo so tells his therapist he’s “self-pissed.” That bit had me dying of laughter when I was dealing with my own demons and was in denial about getting therapy. I was working outside in 113 degree heat and I was laughing so hard it made me light headed and I was like “lol please don’t let me die of heatstroke because I passed out listening to this stupid fucking podcast.”

There’s some super cuts you can find on youtube that have the best bits. Probably the best way to experience it.

It’s got some truly hilarious bits and it’s definitely become sort of a time capsule for the years it was going on, but there are also some bits that I have a very hard time with despite being generally hard to offend.

It is funny at times. Their takes aren’t always terrible either. It is extremely offensive though.

Gay Michael Douglas at the bottom of the sea having sex with crabs will never not have me dying of laughter.

No way! AI is now capable of text to speech?! Something we’ve had since the 80s? The future truly is here.

I’m reminded of the TrashFuture episode intro where they had ChatGPT write dialogue based on ingesting fifty prior transcripts and coming up with a unique ten minute dialogue. Absolute fucking gibberish, but it did have a handful of riffs that you’d see pop up consistently between episodes.

Excited for all written works to be transformed in this novel and value-adding way.

I feel like text to voice has existed for a while. Matt Lech from MR mentioned he used to like turning books into audiobooks and playing nba 2k back in like 2019

Just when you thought attention spans and social estrangement and socially-induced narcissism couldn’t get any worse, Silicon Valley proudly introduces something to make the problem even worse! so-true Now a planet-burning treat printer will entertain you slop hogs with the only thing more sloppy than your regular slop: your own slop, recycled back to you with an obnoxious “influencer” format!

  • This is a tool called NotebookLM, an “AI first” notebook and study tool. This seems to be a tool for those technically literate enough to want AI in this, yet not competent enough to just string together Obsidian and Llama3.1. AI in notebooks is a marginal boost in productivity at best, and detrimental at worst. Deeply unserious product that is computationally inefficient qua computational inefficiency.
