Yes but it’s more than that, western governments and intelligence agencies will deliberately plant fake stories and dictate the slant and even the wording of global news coverage through these mechanisms. And that’s just the traditional media. This article doesn’t go into this topic but the influence and control they have over sites like wikipedia which countless people think of as a reliable source of information is even greater.
