Joining the US military allows kids without wealthy parents to receive a good, affordable college education. Quite a few people I know have gone this route for the express purpose of getting a degree.
It also gives you priority hiring status for government jobs.
Room and board included. If you live off base, they’ll pay your rent. All the money you actually make essentially is fun money.
